    Skusto,

It was caught on the northern side of the Southport seaway. Nasty looking spike so we stayed away from it.

The old Elvis Presley fish as they are known.
As Skusto says, easy to clean & skin. Firm white flesh & pretty tasty.

Leatherjacket. There's a few different types. They are of the same family as triggerfish -ie the spike.
Very good eating. Regular catch around Sydney. You can skin them vey easily.

Yes as all have said , its a leatherjacket, probably a 'yellowfin leatherjacket' .. they differ from triggerfish as they dont have a dorsal fin attached to the spine... check out these 2 urls formore info.. http://www.fish.gov.au/fishnames/fishnames.php?pid=4614

Good on the tooth mate and the spikes harmless..... it's only there to stop big ar$ed fish swallown' it........ mate good tucker next time dont chuck him back... I was sitting off crusoe one day about 15 yrs ago and a bloke caught a nice jacket and he's panickn trying to keep away from the spike I yelled out but he didnt believe me and cut it off..... I'd just moved up from NSW and thought wtf?....... anyway i now know they are a bit rarer up here but apparently they get droves off the reefs at times.
I hear complaints that you cant get ya hook down as they bite the bastards in two.....

Yellow finned leather jacket. One of the few from the family in Queensland I'd be game to eat. Some of the larger Qld jackets are prone to ciguaterra. Probably safer not to eat any of them. Have even seen some of the weekend warriors eating trigger fish.

    Re: Fish ID Please

common leatherjacket.....one of the sweetest fleshed fish in the sea.....great eating.....used to catch heaps of them in NSW......along the breakwalls of the river systems on the run in tide........used nigger gear and peeled prawn or squid strips (very small) for bait while waiting for the tide to turn so that we could fish for niggers(luderick) on the run out.

Spine is harmless unless you go out of your way to get spiked. Fight like a wet paper bag but so easy to clean, and dusted in flour and shallow fried...yummmmmmmm.
