    Trailer Troubles

Was just wondering if anyone has any experience with get a trailer re-compliance? I have a Tinka MT160 trailer which is rated to 750kg. The Tinka MT160 can also be ordered as a MT160 MO (Manual override brakes), which is rated to 1300kg. I’m wondering if I retro fitted the appropriate axle & brakes could the compliance plate be upgraded? As you have probably gathered by this post I took a quick run across the weighbridge and got a bit of a rude surprise.

    Regards

    Hi Big E

Fairly sure that it can be done.

Suggest you get in touch with Mayfair direct as they build Tinka and Redco and see what is involved.

I did my Tinka with their input some time ago when I took it up from an MO to an Elec over hydraulic with breakaway on 3.5t ton hitch

Sorry to say but you do not need to go to that extreme.

Its possible to do the mods, get a letter from the manufacturer etc and simply update the details at the regn dept.

This is what I did and a new label was issued with the upspeced details replacing those previously held by the regn dept.

    Much simpler me thinks.

    Hi BigE

That's correct - can get the manuf to do the upgrade and get a new compliance plate etc, go to Transport and update the details.

I did this a few years ago - just one thing to watch out for - when you do the paperwork they will probably charge you a bit extra rego because it moves you into a new rego category, and they should replace your numberplate with a new, bigger sized one. Apparently, I was told, trailers up to 750kg are issued a smaller sized number plate and those heavier than that get a bigger sized one - took Qld Transport 2 years to sort this oversight out for me!

The rego increase (almost double) and number plate size increase happens at 1.02t .

    Cheers Chris
