NT tales of the fresh

G'day lads,

1st post up in the "sweetwater" section so go easy. Been up in Darwin for a few months now and after doing the majority of my barra fishing in the salt I decided to take the family for a trip to Hardies lagoon. Basically part of the Mary River system that when floods in the Wet is restocked annually with barra and joins the Mary delta.
In the dry, the floodplains recede and it becomes a natural billabong jammed to the hilt with some of the best scenery and fishing one could expect to see in the kakadu.
1st time with the kids meant an arrival on sunrise and we were greeted to mist on the lagoon and quiet anticipation.
Boat in after a few quick checks for some big Lizards I heard frequent the area (they've nicknamed one Kombie) and we were off on the troll.
Straight up the young fella is into a nice sootie before the Mrs hooks her 1st barra all be it a rat.
Trolled the timber before we cleared the narrows and found a few lillies where the Mrs nails a feisty little Toga.
The next 200m looked good with some great weed beds dropping into deep water and it was at this section we nailed a few more Toga and a solid barra which inhaled my little lucifer.
It was quite silver and I'm guessing it would only have been in there since last wet. Released the fish after seeing a green tinge under the eyes as I'm not much of a fresh water eater myself.
Dropped a few good fish bouncing weedless squidgies amongst the timber and missed a few more. Kids started getting restless so after about 3 hrs we set off for home.
Back in Brissie on the red eye tonight so it'll be a 2 week wait for me to get back amongst em. Gotta keep the Mrs happy with a holiday folks.
On the saltwater scene, I still been nailing the trevs and queenies. Stumbled onto a nice patch of Goldens this morning which just went to town on the powerbaits.
The Tuna are due to move into the Harbour soon with the arrival of cooler temps and the Macs are basically of every headland in Darwin. The options are limitless......

Your a lucky man Richie, you have the best of both worlds up there! not only am I jealous but was curious to know if you`ve been down to the old wharf area where the fish and chip shops are where you can have a feed at night? last time I was up there the kids all throw there left over chips in the drink and the big bat fish come up to feed and then out came the biggest barra i think i`ve ever seen in my life, about four of them , absolutely huge big monsters of fish? I can`t remember the name of the place but awesome to watch. Cheers Andrew

hey ritchie lived in darwin for 3 years out at leanyer behind the hotel a bit it is gods country for sure absolutely loved it, the salt water barra scene was unreal. try 4 mile hole for a fish it is an unreal place with good barra in it not bad area to camp either the swamp dogs are big too so be careful great report keep em coming

Nice work Richie. the sweetwater is a nice place to sit and contemplate......your next rustwater assault!!!hehe. togas' teriffic and billabong barra are a blast but i bet you're looking forward to the Tuna Tango.

Hi Richie awesome report mate thanks for taking the time to post and congratulations on your first post here.

Great photo's as well...keep em coming please as many of us over here love anything to do with Barra fishing and your photo's made us feel like going fishing asap!!!! Even though we just got back from fishing!!!

We need more reports from way up north mate as we have lots of reports from Gladstone down etc. The NT sure is a great place, enjoy...

Agree with Lyndon & Kel good to hear reports from the NT, Billabong barra in the dry are great and makes a nice change from SE QLD Lake barra reports
