    Cool who eats mullet

gday all i was wondering after seeing mullet fillets for $7.50 a kilo who actually eats mullet or would take advantage of this bargain and use it for bait.

not too sure that price is a bargain, but Mullet is fine to eat, not everyones preferred, but some people don't eat Oysters either, but others rave about them, it is all a personal thing.

OH I might add, don't rate Mullet as a top Bait either, unless live for Flathead.

I like Big mullet slabs for reds much like tuna is self berlying but Not cheap at that price . I have eaten large seamullet that we have caught but isn't that great as i'm spoilt and use to the better reef and mackeral species

There is a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot

I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges

I think it depends on what you're used to.

Im originally from Perth and most people down there caught herring to pickle and eat. Up here they are for live bait. Similar with Mullet, live bait/Crab bait etc.... but I know people that have eatten it.. to me its always been some sort of bait not sure I could eat it.

    Re: who eats mullet

I would not buy it as fillets... it will be old for sure.

if purchased really fresh it is ok, but buy it whole while you can tell the condition and age of the fish and then fillet it yourself.

it is pretty oily, but with most of the belly flap cut out (very fatty) it is quite edible.

    Fresh is best

    cheers

    Re: who eats mullet

Used to eat mullet a lot when I was a kid. A world of difference between a nice big sea run mullet and one from an estuary. A bit like bream, I don't normally eat them, but if it is caught out of the surf different story (although Tarwhine are even better!).

Mullet are also rich in Omega 3 oils. Mullet roe is also not bad, very rich though. They are an acquired taste!.

    Re: who eats mullet

I eat it occassionally. As said, it is best when they are sea run mullet, a much cleaner less muddy taste. Skinned and boned and they are delicious.

Great sport on light tackle. They fight hard, and like the others sea mullet, cookes simply in bread crumbs and pan fried are quite good to eat

    Re: who eats mullet

FRESH SEA MULLET lightly floured ,and fried in a pan with a squeeze of lemon FANTASTIC but it has to be fresh!!!! It has a strong oily taste with plenty of flavor which i really like but each to there own i did grow up on the stuff so maybe the taste is aquired!

    Re: who eats mullet

Agree with most of the above. Fresh caught they are excellent eating, but forget about buying fillets through a retail outlet. They are a great fish to smoke because of their oily flesh. I smoke the skinned fillets with a glaze of soy sauce, honey and ground black pepper, then vacuum pack them and freeze them. Means you've got a delicious snack available whenever you want it at a fraction of the price you pay for smoked herring from the deli cabinet

the fish shop at capalaba has fillets for 4.99kg, or whole for the same price, I buy the fillets for bait.
