Off the beach skinned boned and eaten the same day, beautiful.
Other than that makes good bait for plenty of different target species.
I eat it but only after its been at sea to clean itself out. If I dont catch my own I get it a good wholesale price from the source direct. It's also export quality, all the females are sold to the Arabs, especially the roe, more money on roe than the fish. hence only male mullet sold. You can tell by the white Melts.
From memory in spawning mode, females have a slight white patch near their tail.
Smoked mullet is also tops, then again I've been brought up on it, full of Omega 3 oils, the bigger the mullet the more fat, the more taste, less fat then its also less tasty. Peter

hhmm Mullet, oily. . . . , I wonder how a Diesel will run on Mullet Oil? catch a couple of thousand, boil them up, scoop off the Oil, bung it into the 'cruiser tank, might be onto something guys, forget Hydrogen and Ethanol and so on!!
Yeah Noelm, the beach haulers would turn into oil barons!
Love fresh caught sea mullet, my second favourite spearfishing target after mulloway. Skinned and boned fillets are great crumbed and shallow fried.
Fantastic bait IMHO, especially for the surf, rocks and inshore.
Oh, and the 'onion' in the gut is a superior bream bait!
Cheers.
gday didnt expect to get so many replies do this it was just a result of my boredom.
Looks like everyone was too...... hahaha
Still love my bunny stew!!!!! looks like I'm Robinson Crusoe here though... and theres nuthin wrong with tripe in white sauce either..... although it's better sauted in butter with garlic, mushrooms and a bit of curry or cumin and chilli
I was with you all the way, eaten plenty of FRESH mullet, freshly jagged off the back wall ( it was legal then) as a kid.
LUV bunnies, yeah, I was still even there on the chokoes, great in an S&K stew,
but the someone had to mention the "T" word,
I would rather starve than have to eat that white sh!t again ( childhood near dramas)
Muzz
yep,
I am with you there Muzz!. It is the only thing I won't eat. Has nothing to do with it being offal, I eat plenty of that! It is just that it tastes like shit! and you can stick the white sauce disguise as well!
Lived on underground mutton as a kid, still like a rabbit stew, but the buggers are expensive these days!
Cheers

mullet is a great source of omega 3 fatty acids. it smokes well, tastes great, and its cheap. what more could you want for 7 bucks a kg?
Grew up eating mullet, mum could not afford much else, plenty of bunnies. Loads of tripe in white sauce and lashings of woostershire sauce. Sheeps brains,ox tail ,boiling chickens(old laying hens),pork brawn, pork bones, mullet roes and milt.
Loved it all then ,love it all now, no wonder the glamour fish are all disappearing we are to freakin fussy.
As a kid did eat heaps of it. Now i play around smoking the stuff. definately wortha shot if you havent before.
Taste of its own but good chewin
mullet is great to eat, high in omega oils, strong taste.have cooked it at work(crumbed) and the remarks were whats that s**t, i only use it for bait etc.
after a few tentative tastes, could not keep up with the cooking.
has to be fresh and it does not come fresher than the nets at kings or from terrys
had the same response to calamari, it got hoovered quicker than i could cook it.
regards
