    Re: who eats mullet

Living here in Vic and without the glamour species of northern states I don't mind eating them.As with others, best fresh. They've got a bit of iodine in them as far as I know and yeah,Omega 3 oils, all good.Makes great bait for gummy sharks too.

    Re: who eats mullet

    Hey Mate,

I reckon fresh deep sea mullet is quite nice as long as it is fresh. For the Estuary ones, there not all that bad, I live on a canal on the Nerang River and always catch those big mullet, 30-40cm buggers and I usually just chuck em in the crab pot but one day i decided to eat one, to my surprise it wasnt all that bad. It is a must to bleed em cause when i did the blood was flowing for minutes and once you fillet them you only have a slight bit of mud from its guts touching it and you can clean it off. Cooking it normally (battered/crumbed etc.) it was different but I definetly dont think it is quite as bad as people say it is.

    Cheers

use to always go cast netting for them with the old boy.. he always had a tongue for them but i neva did there to rich for me as other people have said u really got to have a taste for them. i think tho they are one of the best fish for u to eat because of the oils. we dont eat them much these days as we spoil ourselves and go for the reefies!

With the state of the world economy, markets and Peak Oil looming (and a chance that we will re-visit the depression years) rabbit and mullet might be on the menu again.

    Yuk.

    Re: who eats mullet

Ahhhhhhhhhhh those were the days, you know when you could slip down to the beach, jag a couple of sea mullet out of a school that would stretch half a mile down the beach, fillet them and throw them straight on the barby along with a few pipies.
These days they spot a school of juvinile sea mullet cause thats all thats really left, jump in the jet boats, run the nets around them and haul the whole lot up onto the beach. One year they couldn't market the fish, just took the guts and used front end loaders to bury the rest.I know it was around 15 years ago but when they are moaning about only getting 1$ a kilo why not leave them there. And they call that sustainable fishing.
Sorry about getting off track there.

Yep - with a side serving of chokos.

I could do without that but, seriously, fresh mullet is quite okay. A freshly caught, large sea mullet was a very welcome addition to the dinner table last week.

Undergound mutton, chokos and tripe might be better than starving - but only just.

    Re: who eats mullet

Growing up in Adelaide mum used to buy my dad, sister and i king george whiting and get herself MULLET. Could never understand it. Have tried it and its edible, but bugger that if pearlies or grassies are the alternative.

Get fillets ATM on the island for $5 a kg. Without a doubt my favourite big pearlie bait- 6inch by 1inch strips

I don't even know what Tofu is but suspect that it might be some sort of new age food that yuppies eat.

If that's the case I'd choose rabbit instead and mullet would seem like gourmet food in comparison, unless they were the 'blind' type from Luggage Point.
