Sorry for jumping down your throat Neil, i took your question as being related to what the original post required (which was not mud driving). I have no problems with you wanting personal info on it. The negativity was mainly targeted at earlier posts describing battery dramas.

I believe I was the one who pointed out the drama with the cvt lockout if the battery goes flat. Which for me would be a definite tick in the don't buy box - how about you?

I don't think you know who you want to have a go at because your first rant didn't mention anything about batteries.

My first post was only meant to be constructive for the author, then blokes like you with small car syndrome jump in just because why exactly? I like small suv's - we are looking at the new forester at the moment; however the fact still remains that they'll do most stuff most of the time but when that last cutting/barge entry is chopped out and you're in an unmodified sube,x-trail,rav,crv whatever carryin camping gear you're gunna bottom out and stay there until someone drags you back out.

My wife has had an X-trail for few years now. We have taken it quite a few places I didn't think it would go. It has proved me wrong on many ocations. As far as mud goes, we took it to my parents property a few years ago and the road to there house is about a km long and very steep.(have to go up in first gear on a good day) Anyway they had just put about a foot of dirt on it to top dress the road and it rained. It turned the road into a slop hole. With five adults in the car we went all the way to the top without too many problems at all. My parents were that impressed with the car they went out and bought 1 themselves the next week. They are fine to drive but they do have there limits as well. And no low range or high clearance.

Why? Because i own 1 mate, and because its been bloody brilliant since the word go. And i think the battery issue (fact or not i'm not sure?) is a poor excuse to cross the xtrail off the list, it did win car of the year in its class after all.

New (T31) petrol is around 9.5L/100km for official figures.
New diesel is 7.4 for the manual.
    Old (T3) petrol 9.8

    See greenvehicleguide for details.
    Official figures are usually optimistic.

Typo there - Old one was T30 not T3.

Well done JB - a lot more constructive than your second post mate.

Snasman seems to know more about the canbus system - I just read about it somewhere and thought it might have a negative impact on your weekend if the fridge/ door ajar / doof doof / camping lights / shower or whatever flattened your battery while camping up the beach, thus rendering your car incapable of starting even with jumper leads.

Have a good weekend, I'm off fishing.

Unfortunately your right the "official" figures are normally no where near the mark.

I think they do there testing on a dino in a perfect airconed environment.
I never get any of my info/stats from major companies, i would rather talk to people in the know or own one.

Re: RAV 4 vs X-TRAIL or OTHER...?

I've had the T30 X-Trail for 2 & 1/2 years and do a couple of trips each year out west of Tenterfield offroading through some steep rocky country. I'm still amazed at how well it travels through this fairly rough terrain without low range.

For the price you can't beat the X-Trail for a go anywhere softroader.

Mine comes off its Lease at the end of the year and I was thinking of purchasing the new Pajero for it's increased size and road-handling, however I still might think about a new T31 X-Trail when the time comes.

CAN bus = Controlled area networking, meaning there are a lot less wires around the vehicle in general because the network can multi task various facets, like control, reportage back to the on board computer, cruise control, ABS and so on.
Honestly if they have designed the on board electronics to fail so miserably simply because of a dead battery, they should be flogged. The data retention could be controlled with a watch sized batter on the can controller circuit board.

I have no info to dispute what has been posted, but it sounds crazy..

I had a mate who took an X Trail onto Fraser, and it went well, however a stick or similar flew up and knocked one of the rear wheel sensors out of whack without them knowing, so it was then effectively a 3 wheel drive. From there on, they got bogged a bit more than 'normal' If Nissan have addressed this in the newer models, it should be a reasonable vehicle in normal beach driving conditions.

    hey guys,

    well we are getting closer,
ive been out looking around and am down to the xtrail, forrester or crv.
They all have advantages over one another so its kinda hard to pick.

does anyone know how the new crv performs offroad and how it would stack up against the others, just that it seems to have a much nicer interior than the others,

Out of the vehicles you have listed I can only really vouch for the Subaru because I witnessed one performing on Fraser Island the last trip I had there. It went well and actually surprised me with its performance. He had his wife and two kids with all of his camping gear loaded in and when I saw him unloading at Cathedral where I stayed I was amazed at how much gear he was taking out of the car. Obviously it wasn't going in areas where more clearance was needed but he got through the loose sand straight off the barge where others were getting stuck.
