brain spike would be the easiest way. Don't go through the top of the ray, they have a very hard head, flip it upside down and go in from there, failing that a good hard strike with a club on the top of its head.

To pick up safely, avoid the tail and grab just behind the eyes, there's a couple of holes there and make sur to hold it away from your body to aviod the barb, if unsure you can always cut the tail off before trying to handle them too much, not exactly humane, but still better than copping a sting.

just be careful with the long whip tail like varieties.... I had one swallow a hook once during a night session, and bought the unidentified catch up to the back of my mates boat (4.35m seajay - so sit close to transome anyway) and from the water it was striking the engine cowling repeatedly with its long whip like tail before I even seen what it was. VERY DANGEROUS. If you go to belt one over the head - be VERY careful it doesnt bring its tail up over itself to sting you. We cut the braide and lost the whole rig. IMHO $5 worth of rigging isnt worth a sting...

    Personally, I wouldnt boat one.

They scare the shit out of me...

Obviously - please be VERY careful where and how you dispose of the tail / barb.... Dont want it washed up on a beach somewhere a dog will get it or someone step on it.

    Regards.

    Brad.

i have a 6 or 7 foot hand spear, would it be easier to try to drag the stingray up the beach upside down and then spear it through the head to kill it? i am not to sure, and i am not up for being spiked.

If you are goiung to play with rays, you realy need to know which ones are what.

The cowtail stingrays are suposed to be the most dangerous........ the books say to cut the line one those before they even get close.

    cheers

    Mate,

The size of ray you are going to use should not really be to hard to handle.

The way i do it not saying it is the right way but generally i use a landing net, the tail will get caught up in the net as well as the ray, i then get a pair of pliers and hold the tail, then stand on the ray and cut the tail off. At this point i throw the ray back over the side, however for what you want as was said get and ice pick or some thing and drive it in between the eyes.

Remember if it is to big for the net don't try and catch it.

    lol

    Cheers,

Why do you cut the tail off and throw the ray back?

    Sounds pretty cruel to me.......

so we shouldn't be targetting big fish then... or should we buy a bigger net so fish will fit into it.

Remember Shovellies are rays not sharks! No shortage of them in the bay!, some big buggers too.

    Re: Killing a Stingray?

this is kind of funny really, since Steve Irwins "incident" Stingrays have almost become a Public Enemy, like they are about to attack everyone who goes near one! they have been around for a thousand years , not many people are actually stung by them, let alone killed, but trying to purposely catch one for bait, I guess increases the chances considerably, to cut off the spike and let it go, just "because" seems to me to be a tad silly, there is often debate as to whether they grow a new one or not, if you want one for bait, then so be it (you can also buy them at a Fish Market) and to kill one is not a big drama, it is a Fish, it can be killed, by a variety of methods, so, not too sure what all the commotion is about, they are a reasonable Shark biat (as is a lot of other things) if you want to try one, catch it, be careful, kill it quickly and use it for bait.

    Re: Killing a Stingray?

If you can get your hands on them, to seriously chase sharks half an eel is the very best bait you can get. a single 10/0 in the head or tail (whichever half you use) and you're laughing. It is the one style of fishing where pickers are practically non existant. Failing that, stingrays come a close second.
I fish for them from the bank so i can drag them up and give them some space.
If you flip them upside down you effectively blind them as their eyes are in the sand and it is easier to approach them. Cut the tail off, then cut the flaps off. The main body section of the ray is to bony to use for a bait and can either be used as burley or tossed away.

I think he is refeering to the ability to controll the ray.

I have seen " experienced blokes" wrangle fairly large rays, I also know people who simply wont let them near the boat.
My sisters husband for instance, who is pretty game and has been fishing for over 50 years...... three things he wont have in the boat..... snakes, rays & stone fish.

Shovelies are pretty harmless and good eating, they are a bit of a different story.

    each to his own.

Just don't end up like Steve Irwin.

It's like pickin a fight with a bloke with a knife in his hand........you'd realy want to know aht you are doin and have some...... space.

    cheers

    Re: Killing a Stingray?

the barb on a stingray is very close to the body of the ray the end of the tail isn't dangeous at all i usually grab the end of the tail and hang on there they cant possibly sting you from there. they will only usually sting if stepped on or picked up from on top of the body they can bend the base of there tails over there head.Trust me I have been stung twice by stingrays. first time we were catching them for shark bait and i picked it up behind the eyes and it bent its tail back and drove its spike in between my thumb and pointer.the second time i stood on one while bait netting.

    cheers lochie
