Shornecliffe 5/7/08

Hi all, Keechie and I went fishing at Shornecliffe pier today. It was pooring down with rain which made fishing difficult. We were targetting sharks near the drop off quite a far way out. The only thing was I didn't get any bait, thinking we'd get a few livies in the cast net - I judged wrong. I then went round asking for some pike for bait which some guys were catching. After getting some pike from this guy we started ballooning. When the pike was 150metres out we stopped and let it sit there. Whilst the shark baits were out there we started flicking plastics, Keechie casted backwars over his head (that's how he does it these days ). With the plastics Nic caught 1 trumeter (I think) and 1 Sand whiting. I caught a Winter whiting (was going to be thrown out as a livie but I thought it was a bit small at around 15cm's). After flicking plastics for 30mins we started cast netting with no luck . Time to go get some more bait from the guy . The balloons were still out and we thought the pikes were taking whilst we were cast netting. We reeled the line in to find that my pike was bitten in half and Nics was just simply taken. I then bought a pike of some other people for $5.00 (rip off). We then our new pike and the remainder of my first one out to about 200metres. We then netted again with no lives, "Bugger this I am going to watch the shark rods" I said . All up was a good day to spend with a mate but the weather was shocking . We should be hitting Shornecliffe soon with a bag of fresh mullet and some livies.

to bad mate , better luck next time with the sharks i might go out there in the morning with the boat and see if there are any bullies getting around out there in the fresh . it could have been a taylor taking the yellow tail . next time you try sharking up there , tie the ballon on with light leader and when it is out 200m pull your rod to release the balloon and let your bait drift un weighted with out the balloon . did you try jigging with red wool for the yellow tail or 2inch power baits ?

No we didn't try jigging red wool for the pike but we will do in furture. Can you use rubber bands to release it or not? I think we missed the hits because of the balloons stopped the hits going through the line.

a rubber band would be harder to break , use the lightest line you can so it snaps easy . if you try the red wool have a little running sinker 30-40cm up from the hook with a swivel , like a whiting rig and jig it up from the bottom a bit let it drop and keep doing that until you get to the top than drop it back down and go again . white bait on a smallish hook works well for them to but red wool is cheaper .

But Nico 1lb mono will not break in the lift of a rod will it? Is there half a lb mono ?

lift the rod harder , maybe tie your line in a bow onto the balloon so when you pull hard it comes of , or use a peg or tape try a few different ways and see what works for you .

Easier way to connect your ballon Tom is to form a loop in your line/leader at the desired depth, i.e if your fishing your baits at 2m below the surface make a loop in your leader at 2m. when you inflate your ballon simply pass the loop through your ballon knot. leave the loop tag and about 10-15cm long. Then tighten your ballon knot. The result is that when you get hit by a fish the leader simply slips out of the ballon knot and your connected directly to the fish. You dont have to worry about any line/cotton breaking away. Been using this method LBG for tuna and mackies for years.
If you find that your leader is slipping out to easily pass the leader loop through the ballon knot twice.

lifesaver lollies used as a dissolving link to the balloon works well too.maybe design a rig that catches mackeral, tailor, tuna as well as sharks.orange 2'' single tail grubs on 1/8 jigheads work a treat on pike and berly doesn't hurt either

oh it was bloody cold and wet, i got home and my jumper and shorts weighed about 5kg from all the rain. i am keen on the ballon idea to let it pop out and i also like the stingray flaps idea but i am not too sure on how to handle them as i really don't want to get spiked. Thanks for saturday tom i think you forgot 1 thing to say, you forgot the bait
