names for us and our boats

    Hi
I asked someone on here a short while ago how they got their nickname. The answer i got was not what I expected.

Got me thinking of how we all got our nicknames and also named our boats..

    hi ron,

i got my nickname (racing ron) from mates cause i cant sit still for very long.
the name for my boat is the painted fish, i"m a painter by trade & love fishing & like any good painter i will take a day off to go fishing, so the boss started calling me the painted fish, i am going to have stickers made up to put on her.

I just made my name up years ago cause every summer i fish for barra in local lakes and mad about barra i have them as pets aswell.
I think why go to monduran or awonga when you can catch decent barra in your own town not far from home.
Don't have a name for my boat yet would like somthing about fishing or barra with a pic of a barra

One of my sons is nicknamed Roger. Started when he was just 2, mucking around calling him a ferret. Australian rhyming slang it became Roger Wherrett, and over the years it's just become Rog or Roger. He's now 12 and more often than not he responds to Roger before his real name.

Re: names for us and our boats

I named my boat Smells Like Fish, quite obviously why you might think but it depends on which side of the coin you look at it.....think about it. I had a nickname at school Juice. At primary school in winter we had to run around the oval every morning and I was always at the back of the group and there were steggles chicken trucks driving around back then which read please pass cause we're too fat and juicy to move fast.

That name followed me through to high school and then on to uni. A lot of people didn't even know my real name. Theres only a few people left that call me that now though. I still have to explain every now and then.

My name on Ausfish is simply a nickname an uncle thought up for me which rhymed with my real name which is Andrew.
My boat name evolved from a combination of something nautical and my naughty daughter hence the name Nauti~Gal.

Re: names for us and our boats

I am sure that there will be some interesting replies!

I get asked quite often why "Herm"? Like Vindicator it is a throw back to school days! and it was a shortening of my maiden name Herman.

It has since been replaced by a much longer, harder to pronounce Greek surname and "Herm" hails back to a time when I still was a Herman and was taught to fish when I was really little by my Dad, Pop and Uncle Allan.
So Herm it is - here on Ausfish and also when I order takeaway!

The boat is called "On Strike!" I figured that if I was out in the boat - I was "on strike" from my normal day-to-day duties eg. washing, ironing and chasing the children but on a more positive note I am hoping to be the fish therefore "striking" at them!

Xahn ( sy-ann ) is in memory of my last dog, close to my heart and missed very much. The boat was allready named " Whatever " when we bought it, my missus picked it from our short list based solely on the name, she thinks it suits my attitude on life

The fishing platform I use is called Noboat as I don't realy look at it as a boat, It's just a wee small being a 11 ft tinny, and bangs around like a metal dog dish thrown into the water. The Handbrake has just given us the go ahead to get a 5m cuddy cab, but that's stll 12 months away, so will have to look for a new name then. Any ideas

Re: names for us and our boats

My nickname ..... goes back to my school days ( short version of my surname) - but it pretty well disappeared for 25 years. Then a few years ago 3 of the 8 account managers that I worked with names were "Chris" .... you can imagine the confusion ...... Then the boss started the Nagg (Naj) thing again!
Boat names - Don't have one on the Hornet!
The previous boat ..... because It was taken to sea & I needed a call sign ....... I went with Psycho!!!! The place that 5.35CC has been to , fished off ...... Yep good name.

    Hi all
    Never thought so many replies.

Suppose I should add mine. Ronnie because thats just what everyone calls me.
Boat is Mis- Stress and thats what she was named when we bought her. Everyone says its so fitting but I don't agree at all. Next boat name-- Less Stress???

Re: names for us and our boats

Interesting topic, reading the different replies and 'causes'.

When my wife and I bought our boat, it was because of an inheritance from a deceased Aunt near Sydney. I've always loved boats, had a runnabout when I was younger and when my wife suggested we buy a boat from our inheritance we sat around for days tossing different names about. We both agreed we wanted a name that symbolised what the opportunity and whole idea of buying a boat meant to us. In the end, I suggested it was about 'weaving our dreams', hence the boat name (and nic) 'Dreamweaver'. Those that know me well on some WA fishing forums refer to me as 'Dreamy' . Not sure if I'm comfortable with guys calling me that.
