This reply may be a little late...I just got here..
I picked up a 3.5 whaler with what I believe was the original O/B (35 evinrude, earl 80's). It was mounted in the centre of the transom. Had heaps of problems with cavitation. Even had to replace the forward gear in the lower leg (it was badly worn- indicating the problem had been going on for a while before I got it).
Ended up moving the motor over to the left and this fixed the problems. Since then I've seen a few MW's with the same set up.
they did muck around with single engines for a long time, I don't think it was ever 100% most worked to varying degrees, some on centre, some on the side, but they all some sort of problems, I guess the general rule of thumb, is, 1 motor for each "hull" so mono 1 motor (at least) Cat 2 Motors (at least) and tri, God only knows?
