Yes, the old rod in the holder trick, after a mornings worth of casting flicking twitching, the "do nothing" trick pulls the goods. What a rush! After getting it in the boat I realised we had an audience, apologies to the younger members of that family for the few colourful words I used .

I might work on the old theory of "elephants eating peanuts" or the "jellybean principle" a bit more I think!

What more can be said apart from congratulations. That size is what most of us dream of and you did well to bring it in on light gear. I think luck may have been on your side because big snapper usually peel the line out and take you onto some reef before you can turn them around. Well done. Nice quality snapper indeed.

Yes, luck was definately on my side. But we were nowhere near the reef structure of the island itself, well out in the open. Though there is the odd lump and bump out there, so maybe he was hanging around that sort of stuff.

I tried that trick myself last week, except I didnt put in in a rod holder, I only lent it over the side. The thing got smashed and see ya later rod and reel. Ah well lesson learnt.

But its interesting how you dont always need to be working the plastic to get a hit. After relising this a little while ago, I now retrieve my plastics a lot slower.

well done Slyman, what a jump from one pb to a next. I never really tried that much around Peel, mainly fish mud. Isnt it awesome when you first catch a glimpse of the big red in the water. Bring on the 100cm model

Always fish plastics like a plastic, by that I mean manipulate whats tied on the end of the line to animate it to some degree. Sometimes there is a fine line between doing what appears to be nothing and something. I always hold the rod somewhere close to level with the water, and either point the tip straight to the lure or at an angle away from it.

At all times though, I make sure the line has as little belly in it as possible, this lets you feel every bump from a fish, and the bottom too so you dont get snagged. Too much belly in the line and sometimes you wont know a fish is there until THEY straighten the line and by then they might drop it.

To give the lure some life I'll either lift and drop on a slow retrieve, deadstick it and let the wave action on the boat do the work, or my favourite, wiggle/shake the rod so that the rod tip quivers and transfers the motion to the lure. This one works a treat over really shallow reefs (1-2mts) while retrieving. Tapping the rod butt to make the tip shake works too.

I read that post mate, that would have sucked. I've watched a mate dive in to follow a rod that got belted, he did get it back, but without the fish. Several times I've been belted while holding the rod and gotten stitched up, after that, the rod either goes into the holder or I'll bring the line in if I'm going to do something.
