    Hi Fellow ausfish members,

I am planning my first trip to swains reef in october. Interested in hearing any recommendations for a tough heavy duty spinning reel and rod that I can use for bottom bashing from the mother ship and casting in the shallows from a dory.

look into the Okuma high speed spinning reels. not sure on model, but they price around $160ish. 6.4:1. load this with 80lb braid and you'd be set.

as for rods.... something around 15kg should do at about 7ft.

Thumbs up Re: New Ausfish Member

Just back from USA and bought a new shimano 6500B baitrunner for $119 in Denver. Braid was also about half the price of what it costs in Oz. Now looking for a rod. Only 12 days to go before we head out to swains

Hey jc check out the Nitro Godzilla 10-15kg spin rod. I used this at swains last week with a stella 8000, bloody awesome rod. 2 piece aerospace graphite, its lite enought in the tip to throw soft plastics but has heaps of bottom end. Mine cost $260 from Jone's Tackle.
