Is it only 8m+ boats in NSW that are required to get an EPIRB? I thought it was for all boats venturing more than 2NM offshore across all states.

Apparently so Paul. Here is the link to the relevant NSW Waterway page. Only recommended for vessels under 8m, not compulsory.

I've often noticed the line in the water around the coast at state boundaries that makes it much safer in NSW to be in a boat under 8m and more than 2 miles out. Some law makers need their heads banged together seriously.

So in NSW it is safe to be out there in a boat under 8m without a epirb bt in a boat over 8m you must have one. Yep that's intelligent.

    Poor confused Tweed people
