Mangrove Worms????
G'day,
I'm heading up to the Maroochy River with a mate. He is dead keen on collecting Mangrove Worms, but niether of us have ever done it before.
I was hoping someone could steer us in the right direction on where to look for them (i'm assuming in the mud at low tide) and what to use (i.e shovel, garden fork, hands, etc....)
Any info would be greatly appreciated... It's been a while since I've fished an estuary and I've really only ever used yabbies (or bought bait).
Cheers,
Ben

Re: Mangrove Worms????
Ben yes there are bloodworms in that river but you would have to check regulations for that area, i live on the gold coast and it is ILLEGAL to dig with a spade or shovel because of damage you could cause to mangrove roots.
A fork is legal in some areas but i find the mud to sloppy to make it worthwhile.
I find bare hands the best.
I doubt weather anyone is going to come forward with any great spots for digging, i know i wouldn't tell anyone where i dig, i have been burnt by former freinds before.
If you do get some you will find they are the best whiting bait you can get. cheers wayne.

when you wrote mangrove worms i thort you were talking about the one's you have to cut out of the mangrove trees so you can eat em, not blood worms, just a tip dont eat them, there horrid and if you eat to many you get the runs. i havent eaten blood worms so i cant help ya there hehe.

Re: Mangrove Worms????
I have never dug for them, but I read an article somewhere, I think it was a little book on collecting bait.
The advise was this, 'Wade into the mud in close to the mangroves shove your arms into the mud as deep as you can then pull up a big lump of mud and pull it apart a little at a time."
The premise is that a fork wont go deep enough and will break the worms because the mud is so sticky.
Its aparently a messy smelly business, but worth the effort.
Hope that helps

Re: Mangrove Worms????
did it years ago when i was a kid. end up with a small swimming pool with you collapsing the edge 2 get 2 the worms. If you cut 3" slabs of mud off the worms used to hange between the exposed slab and the side of the hole. If the mud is the right consistency it isnt that bad. Having said that it was 40 years ago around colmslie. Too afraid of broken bottles in mud now. Good luck.
