I have a 50 Yammie 4stk on the back of my Allycraft 445 dory. Great motor uses bugger all fuel, starts first time all the time.
Cannot fault it, except I brought mine just before the trolling function on the tiller was available

Cannot see that the Honda wouldn't do it for you, one thing IMO the cost to repair a 4st is so extraordinarily high that your 04 model in 4 years may not be worth very much at all, I know I simply wouldn't consider a 8 year old 4st unless it was cheap enough to offset most of the risk which would mean near a wrecker purchase price.Originally Posted by rando

BTW there is a reason why many choose the yam, is because they got it pretty close to right, is the Honda or the Zuk 50 also a 40hp in another rating?

I've got a 50 Yammie 4 stroke, 2002 carby model on the back of a Fisher 450 plate centre console. It is a heavy, deep vee rig. Yesterday, for example, I did 114 km for 34 l of juice. It has over 1000 hours on it and runs sweet.
These engines are excellent of fuel, and most of all, they are reliable. I would buy another Yamaha 4 stroke tomorrow, no question.

We just bought a hornet trophy 435 and put the new 2008 50hp Yamaha 4 stoke on her and it is amazing. First tank of fuel we did approx. 26 km for 20 litres.It was smooth quiet and started first crank. Had a 30 HP Yamaha 2 stroke before which was great but this is at the next level. Very Happy!!!!
Simbasi 1.3km per litre is actually pretty bad. Are you sure on those figures?
I think all outboards are comparitively equal these days. Any known brand you buy will give you years of trouble free boating 99 times out of 100.
Another thing to consider though which does extend the gap between a good outboard and a great one is the tiller handle/extras addons etc.
I was keen on buying a new 4 stroke suzuki but I was less than impressed with their tiller handle, very cheap and not designed well at all. On the other hand the Yamaha tiller is awesome to use and well thought out
Yep the Yamaha tiller setup is a beauty,,, saying that also maybe the most important aspect is getting good service on your motor maybe rather than brand names?

Rando, that sounds like typical boat dealer BS. They are as bad as car dealers with their stories.
I have to agree about the tiller handle. I currently have a 40 Yammie 2 stroke with the PTT function and the positioning of the PTT switch alone puts it out there above the others with regard to ease of use.
I have the Yammy 80 4 st and a Yammy 10 2 st and I love them both, they constantly amaze me by ease od starting etc. Dunno the fuel specs on the 80 other than to say it trolls all day and hardly uses any fuel, in fact I have had to put less in it because I am concerned about it going off during the long layups it gets in winter down here with the drought the way it is.
An observation on dealers bagging other products - it doesn't matter whether you like Yammy, Suzy, Mercs, Honda or whatever - you have to concede that they are all fantastically successful brands in the marketplace with a very strong history and loyal followings. Within models there will be differences in features and specs from one to the other, as is oulined above.
If all your dealer can do is bag them, well he has nothing constructive to say. He would lose my business straight away.
