How many k's on your Navara STR

    Hey Guys,

Considering buying an 02 Nissan navara turbo diesel with 290k's onit.

How many k's have you done, and what issues have you run into?

Just after owners input please, not speculation.

    Regards

Re: How many k's on your Navara STR

    Hey Darren,

I have a 2002 model. It only has 189K on it, and I thought I had done a few k's.

Apparently the head on these models have issues ( i have just done mine ).

I would be having the injector pump checked as well.

Little things like adding a snorkel helps as well as a Turbo boost gauge or a EGT gauge.

Nothing else really stands out............... depends on the work it has done and the previous drivers.... !!!

    Cheers Phill

    Thanks Phil,

It's been a company car for a construction company.

The turbo has just been rebuilt, and the mechanic who did it is selling the car.

I just looked at it and drove it, and all seems pretty good.

I'll get an racq check done on it before I commit.

    Regards

    Darren

    Thanks Scotty,

It all seems pretty good. I know the k's are high but it's not too much of an issue for me, as long as the price is good.

Darren I had the '02 before my d40. I traded it at 50,00k's and never had an issue with it. Having said that , 290,000 is an engine on its last legs. I wouldn't buy it. They also had some issues with engines exploding internally.

Just my thoughts, but I would never by a vehicle with that many k's.
You are entitled to my opinion!

    Darren'

I had an 02 D22 Navara. In 4 years I did 240,000klm's and never had a single problem.
In Dec 06 I bought another D22 STR. 4 months later the turbo developed an odd noise and was promply replaced by Nissan under warranty, other than that minor hicup its been trouble free - so far.
I do my own oil changes every 5,000klm's,which is sure is beneficial for long engine life in diesels.

Admittadly, I'd be reluctant to buy any vehicle with 290,000 clicks on the clock.

We have five D22's at work, all are dual cab 4x4 DX utes with alluminum trays. They all have done 150,000kms in three years with the exception of mine (STR with 30K on it):

1 just threw its turbo, its in a million pieces and going now where, one had its tie rod end bent from too rough a time on building sites, another is at AAMI getting straightened out after the chassis rails got bent in a prang, the other bent the gear box mount after tapping a small rock in some sand (this made the car nearly undriveable as it stuffed the drive line), this same car also stalls often and won't restart unless you put injector cleaner in it (yes they have been cleaned by nissan and no it didn't do anything).

None of them are capable of getting more than 35,000km out of a set of front tyres before chopping the inside down to canvas, leaving the outside with deep tread (yes they get regular allignments) - something to do with bent tie rods I suspect.

They all use 10L/100km on fuel with 300kg permanently in the back.

My STR suffers none of the about issues manly because its only ever driven on the tarmac from home to the office, but is by far the best to drive of them all. But its still new.

We have just bought two new SR hilux's (same configuration) and don't think we will be looking back.

    Hope this helps.

PS - I should say that all the DX utes have missed a few services and get flogged 12 hours a day 5 days a week, so its not suprising we have done so much damage.

Re: How many k's on your Navara STR

this car has done the equivelant of almost 15 years worth of driving. The average is 20ks a year so with 290ks its getting on. Having said that, a diesel motor that has been regularly serviced, minimum every 6months or 10ks, (whatever comes 1st) could do 500ks. Keep in mind diesel motors are very expensive to replace/rebuild so if you're not 100% confident it's been serviced religiously, STEER CLEAR of it. For what ever your budget is, you would be better off buying something a few years older but with less Ks, and you'd also be better off getting into a hilux than Navara

    Hey Guys,

I gave that particular car a miss, as I was unsure of it, and I decided to hold off for a bit.

I will definately buy an Str.

We've got a DX at work, which also suffered the chew the tyres issues on a regular basis.

A Hilux won't tow 3 tonne. A Navara won't do it well either, but will do it legally!

Re: How many k's on your Navara STR

    Darren,
Just in case you weren't aware, the earlier D22 models were rated at 3000kg, but the more recent models (3.0TD) dropped to 2800kg.

Not sure how towball down mass affected the towing capacity on the D22's, but in the manual for my D40 the towing capacity is reduced as the towball mass increases. Can't remember figures off-hand, but from memory it meant you needed a very light drawbar load if you were towing close to 3t - which is not the best!
    cheers

Re: How many k's on your Navara STR

    Hey Guys,

I'm still nipping at the market, and getting closer to getting one.

Does anyone have anything to say about the ST-R in petrol? What sort of economy and k's do you think I should expect from the 3.3L engine?

If anyone knows of a tray back dual cab available for under 20k could they let me know?

Is the petrol still rated to tow 3.0 tonne?

    Regards

    Darren
