Moreton Bay Mill Pond

Hi Everyone,

I am only new to fishing in the Bay but just thought i would post a report regarding what i couldn't catch rather then what i did.

Yesterday (Thursday) would be the best day on the water i have had in years, the weather was perfect and the bay was dead flat, decided to take my tinnie over to Moreton Island for a look and a bit of a fish. I was south of Tangalooma when i came across a school of what i think were some type of tuna, i got close but all i had was a couple of soft plastics, i could land the plastic in the middle but nothing hit it
I think i am now hooked on trying to catch these types of fish rather then the usual bream, flathead etc..

So my question is : Could someone please give me some pointers on catching these fish if i ever get close to them again??

Any help would be appreciated.

I am not sure if many people check fuel economy, but i have a 40hp 4stroke Yammy behind a 4.35 Sea Jay. I travelled 110km in the bay on Thursday and used 28ltrs ? Not sure if this is good or bad but i was pretty happy, mostly travelling at a cruising speed of 40kph

That's pretty good on fuel. I did a trip recently, about 60km round trip and used about 30L. I have a 40hp Yamaha 2 stroke (3 cyl job) on a 4.45m Quintrex Dory, a little bit of sea that day, but not too bad. Cruising about 35km/hr.
You should be happy with your figures nearly twice as good as my 2 banger.

Hi Rat-King and fivefishes,

I think the difference is 4 stroke vs 2 stroke.

I don't have a Tacho on my boat and not sure if you can easily put one on but at 40k i am about 3/4 throttle, and a top speed of just under 60kph in good conditions. The other bit i love about my boat is that it has 60ltrs of fuel under the floor. I now know that i can go where ever i want and i know fuel is not an issue.

Plenty of helpful advice but you would have been very lucky if you stumbled upon a school of longtails, i haven't come across a school inside the bay for a few months. I have however come across the odd school of mac tuna. Mac tuna don't seem to like the plastics as much as longtails and you are far better to use little slugs (20gram and under) to target these little speedster

Yeah i am really not sure what type they were ?

Either way i would have liked to get a one a little closer ( like in my esky) for research purposes of course and really confirm what they were.

I shall have to take a trip to a local tackle shop and see what i can pick up.
Only problem being that I don't get out all that often and doubt that the weather would be that good again when i do get a chance.. But at least next time i will be better prepared.
