Mate i know guys that fish from 4m tinnies where an eprib is required, you dont have to be rich to be able to venture past the bar... I think its a bit unfair you categorize all offshore fishers as blokes that own 6m boats with all the toys.. fact is not everybody can afford it, 400 bucks would cover fuel for half a year if you fished out of a 4m tinny.

    Jas

Also let me know where you can get them for 375 bucks? retail seems to be 430...

    Jas,
I'm sure that the guys in the tinnies have their EPIRB. But you do not need to go far offshore to be required to carry one. I made no mention of boat size.
I got mine (GME) from Glascraft at Murrarie for $375 in Feb.

Is this a sticker they subsequently mail back to you?

    HR,

There will be a huge mail out of the registration stickers shortly.
All existing registered beacons will need to attach the sticker when recieved. From then on new registrations will recieve a sticker as part of registration.
The sticker is confirmation of registration and will satisfy state regs for "confirmation of registration" if inspected by police or B&FP. Stickers will need to be renewed every 2 years, which can be done online.
These stickers will make it difficult for those wanting to share a beacon. As of 24th June rego details can be updated online, but the new owner may have to wait for a new sticker to be sent out, then change details back again when the beacon goes to another boat?

So if I have my 406 epirb on the boat , and I have a plb on my lifejacket, and I go oveboard and set off the plb, is this signal received in the same way as any 406epirb? The authorities dont know what type of unit is sending the distress signal, and its just a compliance issue, cos I need a 406 epirb that floats upright and is labelled?

If a digital epirb is accurate on locating me, why would I pay 200 extra for a gps unit? Whats the time delay in getting a position from a 406epirb?

    TIA
    Andrew

The GPS unit would be really handy down south in colder water where your life expectancy is around 1-2 hours in winter. Up here, the critters tend to get you before hypothermia does.

    Have a read here http://beacons.amsa.gov.au/documents...n_brochure.pdf

A 406 epirb is only accurate to 5km, which is still a pretty big area to search especially in rough seas. The GPS version is accurate to within a few meters.

this is in now way a shot at anyone, it is not meant to be offensive at all.

if you are going in open water, ragardless of the size of boat or where etc. Surely above everything else, safety should be your main concern.

If you cannot afford an epirb as a necessary safety item then perhaps looking for an alternative hobby may be a good move.

Let's face it, $400 - $600 on top of the purchase of any decent boat that you intend travelling into open water in ( now I am not talking about a $500 special that has been lying around someones yard for 100 years) is not a massive investment especially when it is a safety item.

You should look at safety first, then boat and then add ons such as tackle etc.
worst comes to worst, fish with handlines but make sure you have the epirb.

here's a link that's been posted on threads before:
    http://www.boatus.com/foundation/Fin...39/default.htm

Not sure how relevant it is but worth a read nonetheless.

If SatNav or Chine read this thread they may be able to comment on G-EPIRBs.
If it was me, and I could afford one, I'd look at one of the GPS enabled EPIRBs.

You just need to make sure that you specify that you want a Marine approved EPIRB, not a PLB.

    question for gelsec ,
how can these guys offer a hire service when as explained in one of your posts that you cant even borrow one from a mate , seems to me that hiring one is illegal . what do you think gelsec ?

secondly those stickers you speak of , i see nothing in the legislation about them therefore it is not a requirement that you can be fined for , would you agree with that gelsec ?

    cheers

don't know how the hiring works now, or how it will work after the state regs come into force.

the requirement in the regs is for mandatory registration, the AMSA stickers will be confirmation of registration and satisfy the state regs. the authorities will be able to check if your beacon is registered by looking at the sticker. if you don't recieve a sticker by the due date, it would be advisable to carry the confirmation letter that is sent out after registering. whether or not you're fined is up to the enforcement officer.

    cheers

AMSA are happy to provide answers to queries, do as I did, ring them up and ask.

i was more curious as to your opinion as you are the one posting the rules up , i know how to read the legislation and it differs to what you have been posting in some cases , so is this a case of passing off recommendations as law or is it actually law ?

Re: 406 gps epirb hire $29 pm

has anyone actually hired one of those EPIRB's. We are coming up to Gladstone in our hornets in Sept/Oct & were going to hire one. We probably wont even go more than our 2nm offshore, but if the weather is good, we sure will - plus we want safety first in unknown area anyhow. We only fish saltwater once a year or two so EPIRB is a bit pricey for us.

Even better, anyone want to hire one they wont be using to us for 10days or so. I will make some calls/emails (so I have it in writing) to the appropriate authority for some clarification.

    Thanks
    Cind
