Colmslie Sharking

Hey all, well me and fellow ausfisher Keechie are going for a fish at Colmslie this weekend. We are hoping for our first sharks which hopefully we will get, but there are a few things we need to know about sharking this area. I have fished it a number of times with only a few bream but nothing major but all that could change from a couple of answers. Firstly, what size sharks are around that area? Secondly, what baits, slimy macks, mullet? Finally will we need wire?

Definately wire.Live baits and flesh baits work well.If you get a legal bream,fillet and theres your bait.Cheers Jamie

Hey mate,
I've never fished the river for sharks but I can give a few pointers. Firstly, get decent wire and make your own traces, most of those pre-made rigs break at the snap when put under tension. Second, have at least two rods out, varying the depths the bait is kept at, they're not always in same part of the water column. Of course, fresh is best and Jamie's point is a good one. Hey Tailorboi I have neer caught a shark that close to the mouth but I have caught plenty the other side of the gateway! The secret is burley anything realy bloody/oily pilchards tuna mullet dont use big chunks but more of a mist!! Remember a little bit alot not alot alittle!! For sure vary your height in the water column but all my success has bn on the bottom!!If u can fish in gear by using a rod holder and 1-2kg pressure it makes it easier to hookup. Make sure u set the hook hard!! have good quality wire!! Good luck guys Cheers Simon

50lb!!!!!, thats pretty extreme, do u think u will need hevier, how big are the sharks u are targeting, do u want to eat them

I've always caught sharks in the deep channels near Peel on 15lb mono with no wire, whole mullet as bait.

Occasionally one bites through the mono but most of them are landed, and I reckon I get more bites with no wire.

I think 50lb is a little extreme!!!!! i use 20-25lb mono and have caught stingray over 60lb and you know what their like when they go to ground (its like trying to pull the plug out!!), after all fishing is all about the fight i love the reward when you've played a big fish for 20-30mins by the time you get it on the beach your both tired out!! ( now thats fishin!!), as for wire i say a must, nothing worse than playing a good fish for a while only to have it bite you off without ever seeing it!! Any fresh bait will do as long has it has a good scent to it. Most sharks ive taken have come of the bottom (beach fishing) off deep water use 2 rods ,with 1 bait under a float (this covers good ground too so you know which area their feeding in).

In the bay I use 8kg with 80lb leader. I only take sharks around 4ft cause when they come aboard they can go ape till they are subdued any bigger is asking for trouble in a 4.2mtr tinnie.

Circle hooks are better cause they lodge in the corner of the mouth most times. I use 9os.

Take extreme care if getting hooks out. You've only got 2 hands and I reckon you'll need them to type your report.

I don't think you want to be using anything that strong mate. I think 20lb would be the upper limit unless you're specifically targetting larger sharks (which I wouldn't advise). Assuming you did hook a bigger fish, you and your fishing mates would be doing a lot of swaps to keep the tension up on that fish and gear that can handle line that strong is heavy. Stick with the smaller fellas for now and the lighter line classes, you'll still have plenty of fun I'm sure.
