    Lumpy Bay trip

I wasn’t going to post a report, but, hey! We can’t only have the great reports on here.

Decided that yesterday was my best bet for a fish as today even though the weather was better, I had a job interview, which kinda was more important. So an early morning crack at the Bulwer dropoffs was called. Weather looked to be wet, but with a 10-15 SE it looked as though it would be comfortable enough along the west of Moreton.

After bouncing across the bay and looking for the extremely dim grey sunrise, I pulled up at one of my spots and popped a lime tiger over the side. With the current slowing towards the top of the tide, I could use a lighter jig and the plastic took its time getting to the 20m mark. After bouncing it on the bottom for a while, I tried a trick I’ve learned recently and reeled in a few meters then jigged it again and repeat. Second raise with this new technique and presto!! braid starts screaming off the little reel I’m using. After turning it just as the backing came in sight I won back most of the line and got to see a small mack tuna which promptly decided I was not good company and headed off at a rate of knots. Being only 12lb braid it took a while to persuade the tuna that it was better in the boat, but soon enough it was netted and sent back to grow a whole lot bigger. Not was I was chasing, but another species to add to the caught on plastics list.
A few casts later, the lime tiger scores again, and I’m on to a pan sized squire, which went into the esky for use in the frying pan a bit later in the day.

By now, the rain was coming down in a serious way and the wind had swung to the south, give the waves that little bit of extra lumpiness that I really didn’t want inside the bay. The fish are going ballistic, and I’m getting into lots of squire and grassies that are just a bit too small.

While this is going on, flocks of gannets were coming past chasing some really big bait fish. I tossed a few plastics into the school and could feel big bodies hit the line every now and then, but no takers.

If anything, the wind appeared to have gotten a whole lot stronger and the rain was coming down horizontally. The old boat can handle sloppy conditions quite well, but I wasn’t so sure about the driver and decided that I’d rather not have the extra bruises. So home it was, with a grand total of one fish.
