Kevlact 5.2 repower with xl 60hp yami 4st ....steering modifications

    Hi guys ,

I am repowering my 5.2 kevla with 60 hp xl yami's modifying the pods to do so , would any one have any comments regarding the steering modifications that need to be done to accommodate the change , my model has cable steering with a ss rod running under the duck board between nylon bushes , pushing ,tie rods either side to the engines . It would be good to hear on the types of mods that have been done. I have spoken to a few dealers and they say go to hydraulics with twin bull horns , but some say go to a single hydralic with tie rods to eliminate wandering if the rams go out of sync. Your thoughts and experiences would be appreciated. What is a good Brand of Hydraulic steering ,

    Thanks

    Fred

probably a dozen ways to go about it, twin rams is good, single with tie bar is good, cable is last on the list, it works is about all I can say, so what we have is Motor steering points 5" higher than before, correct? I guess (without seeing it) might be possible to get a different bend tie bar made up, I have seen that a few times, but in the long run, going Hydraulic might be the best option, more expensive, yes, better, yes, now twin or single, going single, you sort of have the same problem you have now! going twin rams, fixes all your dramas, the Motors "wandering" is possible, but not common, that usually happens on setups with a Hydraulic tie setup.

I forgot, I also used to have an "under the duckboard" setup, and it just had short steering ends, that had swivel joints at each end, and they just ran at an angle from the tie bar to the Motor, I guess like you have now sort of, never gave me any troubles at all

Thanks for the pics Ian they are a big help , Just a question do you think its worth while adding some extra buoyancy into the pods during the modification. given that the motors a a little heavier than the 2 strokes.

My boat sits well with these pods and motors, i have the same pods as kittycat(Wayne) and he hangs honda 75's of them and there HUGE!!! Wayne reckons i have the larger pods though?

Below is a pic of mine in the water and waynes with the 75's in the water i've also included another photo of the motor setup!

Yep the previous owner thought it would give it lift under way but i reckon all it does is add 10kg to each side. It stuck on very well so if i decide to take the pods off and repaint i'll remove it then but they will take alot of paint off when i remove them so until then they stay!

    Hey Ian,

I'm going through the repower now too.

Bought a set of Merc 60 4 strokes, which are yet to be fitted. The Hondas are off, and the boat's getting a lick of paint. So within the next two weeks i'll have a barrage of questions i'm sure.

What are your spray deflectors made from? Is that cutting board material?

Is your cav plate lined up with the bottom of the hull, or the bottom of the pods? They look deep to me?

Approximately how wide and long are your deflectors?

    Regards

    Darren

Re: Kevlact 5.2 repower with xl 60hp yami 4st ....steering modifications

    Darren

Yep cutting board material and they are about 5 inches wide on the inside but i have seen some staino ones that are only 3 inches wide and they seem to work!

As for the motors do the below pics help?

    Uan

Ps. i couldn't help myself with the last one

PPS. i'm all out of pics so i hope that's all

Hi fromeo, i love talking 5.2 kc's! Just an idea, mine is a 97 model 5.2 with the factory raised pods. Its been setup with 1 ram for the hydraulic steering which is mounted under the duckboard, with arms coming straight out to each motor. If you have an earlier hull what they do in this case is raise the duckboard to suit the height of the new pods. Its a simple and effective method, probably the cheapest way to go. Ian im not saying your setup is wrong buddy I just think this is the cheapest way and it works perfect. My boats not at home at the moment so i cant take a pic, but I have one of a guy who does this for a living. I have a pic which may help, Dean.
