Re: Soft plastics at Swains Reef?? How to fish them???

    G'day Pod,

I found using 3/8-5/8 oz jig heads with 7/0 hooks on 7" jerk shads in the colours you mentioned I had amazing success in the 35-50mt depths fishing from the mother boat. I positioned myself in the stern spot, cast the jig in front of the drift to the approximate depth we were fishing, I'd work the plastic on its decent down the water column with a few twitches, but when I would come over the top of the line, I'd know the jig was in the the strike zone, so I'd work it pretty hard through that area, attempting to keep the jig in the strike zone for as long as possible, with a few good twitches, let out some line, a few more twitches, let out some more line etc until a hook up on the drop.

I found trying to cast 1/8 -1/4 oz from the dory's in the shallows with 60lb leader was just too hard so didn't bother, I didn't really have the right outfit for that kind of thing - I misread the need and had a wrong custom rod built.

I did take some 4oz jig heads in an attempt to get a jig down quickly in 100 mts with no success - I wouldn't bother with that again.

    hope that's helpful

    cheers
