Second hand motors really are touch and go,being such a small horsepwer they arent that expensive new,if you do want a second hand one the best way i feel to play it safe is to pull the head off and have a look but not many people are keen to let you do this,if you buy through a out board wrecker i would say they would let you remove head for inspection,if buying privately id compression test check gearbox oil and then toss a coin.

Ausfish mate! I bought a nearly new 40 Yammie a while back of a fellow Ausfisher and it is a beauty.

there is lots of good ones about, but there is also a lot of junkers, you will need to sort through the rubbish and have the cash ready to pounce if one comes up, why not at least give the old one the "benefit of the doubt" and at least give it a try, you may be surprised!

    Hi Mate,

Wynnum Marine often has second hand outboards from time to time. You may be lucky enough to find what your looking for. Their number is 3396 9777

    or
Leisure marine at Capalaba -Phone 3245 5111
    or
Bayside motorama marine.- (not sure of their number)

both situated on Old Cleveland Road.

    Cheers
    Scott

sometimes people will still be using a motor and advertise it
an hour or so running on the water from a cold start should convince you if it's for you or not

Well considering I looked at a brand new Tohatsu earlier in the year and a 9hp was about $1200 I don't agree with the "They aren't that expensive" sentiment.
I'd do like NoelM says, fresh fuel, new plugs set at the correct gap, and give it a crack at cranking it over. Make sure she sucks water, and then if you are confident, take her in for a good mechanic to have a look over and perform a compression test.
Or, if she goes, just enjoy it while it lasts.
