Thread: monduran a 4stroker in future ?

    monduran a 4stroker in future ?

Does anybody in the monduran dam barra fishing scene or any fishing scene at monduran have any idea if it will ever go to a 4 stoke motor only dam in the future. Or Being just a irrigation dam do you think the 2 strokers will be safe for a while. It might change peoples mind if purchasing a new motor in the future. Is there any inside news that could be shared.
    Thanks Shane.

except for "scuttlebutt" and whispers, there has been no firm decision to make any Dam, 4 stroke, 2 stroke or any other stroke YET!! of course that is excluding the few that are already Electric only.

Thanks for your feed back noelm. I am starting to look around for a new boat. 4 stroke means i will have to wait another 1and a half to save up for it. Leaning towards 2 stoke at the moment just for cost reasons.

    Don't forget Lake Lenthall!
    • • Speed Limit 6 knots - no wash and no skiing
    • • 4-Stroke and Direct Injection 2-Stroke engines up to 60hp. This equates to all 2 & 3 Star OEDA (Outboard Engine Distributors Association) rated engines.
    • • 1 to 6hp traditional 2-Strokes (0 and 1 star OEDA rated) permitted until January 2010.

    Cheers

I would think that it would cost local business a lot of revinue if it went that way. as people would avoid the place. Little gin gin would become a real sleepy town.

Lets hope not, you won't get the same thrust out of a little four stroke that you get out of a two stroke.

Unless you are going over 30hp you want the acceleration of the two stroke and they ain't the noisy old smokers they used to be. Remember a four stroke is much heavier that a two stroke so if you want a smaller boat to scoot along you want a two stroke. It wasn't long ago i went through the same exercise.

Seems counter productive in this day and age to influence people to get bigger, heavier and more expensive motors.

    IMHO

yep i agree on that i would stick to a 2 stroke if i had a smaller boat price has a big influance on it thats for sure and if the manufactors where serious about if the four stroke would be the same price . i have a 385 explorer with a 2 stroke 25 on it and i priced a four stroke and i cant justify the 2000 dollars more and the extra 25kg of wieght its just not worth it. Not that im not into saving the enviroment i just cant afford to unforuntaley

Why have you singled out Monduran??? why not any or the other DRINKING water dams in QLD??? This 2 stroke ban on dams rumour has been floated around for years. It might happen....but it will probably happen to ALL dams, particularly in the SE corner where the city folk are a bit precious about what they drink!!

    Re: monduran a 4stroker in future ?

I think we need to consider 2 strokes as two completely different categories these day, most "lump" them in one basket, there is "new" 2 strokes and 4 strokes in one basket, then there is "old" 2 strokes in their own basket, modern "injected" 2 strokes are just as environmentaly friendly as any 4 stroke, and may even be more so when the home Maintainer changes his Oil and tips it over the back fence to dispose of it, so, in essence, I doubt that ALL 2 strokes will be banned for a long time yet, but it certainly may happen.

yes the rediculous ban of them on lenthalls has stuffed it for a lot of people and with the level of the wall raised and a heap of water going over the top the place has lost its appeal real quick,it used to be full of all kinds of boats but it looks ordinary now with all the dead trees and the new rules have made it a ghost dam ,have been there 3 times in 1 month and seen 2 other boats and caught 1 bass

    I dunno about ghost Dam.

Now that the water level is up to the new height it looks great again with trees overhanging the water as before. Yes it was a moonscape after the clearing done when the wall was raised and before the level came up, however if that wasn't done there would have been many tonnes of rotting vegetation sitting in the water which doesn't help either the fish or our drinking water.

I think you'll find that the lack of boats lately has more to do with the influx of water making it not worth fishing for a while plus as you mentioned unfortunately fish have gone over the wall in the flood.

Whilst it's a bummer about the fish going over the wall, I guess we're lucky in that our dam is full unlike many others. And fish will go over the wall in any dam, no use whinging about it it's just nature at work.

Personally I think the new motor regulations are a good thing. Lets not forget this is our drinking water we're talking about, plus it might not have happened had there not been so many instances of people hooning around the dam (which is full of many stumps below the waterline) which has led to the need of tighter regulations and policing as common sense doesn't seem to be enough for some unfortunately.

I'd much rather see changes like those made at Lenthalls than see the dam closed to public access completely due to irresponsible behaviour of some.

In short, NO we locals have not heard anything about 2 stroke bans.

the % of boats at Monduran that have the 'old stlye' 2 stroke motors (which would be the ones to go...if it were to happen) would be about 20% from what I have seen on Monduran. The rest are 4 strokes or DI 2 strokes with the OEDA rating. These would unlikely be banned due to low emmission technology. Now, on an average summer weekend there may be 80+ boats on the water...that still leaves plenty of fisherfolk. I doubt it would impact enough to see 'people avoiding the place'. Gin Gin was around well before fishing at Monduran. Its the little road called Bruce that come in one end and out the other which stops Gin Gin becoming a 'sleepy' little town, not just 2 stroke owners.

I understand your concerns about 2 strokes future and your considerations with buying one....I just cant understand why you have attached these concerns to Monduran specifically.....we just need to be careful what we post.....false rumours spread easilly in the fishing industy unfortunatly.

    Re: monduran a 4stroker in future ?

Adding to Steves post I'd like to clarify that my post was specifically about Lenthalls Dam (sorry to be off topic!) and I have no knowledge of any such change being made at Monduran!

Even if such a change were ever made I doubt very much it would have much (negative) impact on Monduran as it is such a fantastic place to fish!

    Re: monduran a 4stroker in future ?

With regard to buying any outboard motor .... regardless of whether it will be used on impoundments or not - My money would be going on the 4 strokes or DI 2 Strokes ........ That way you would have no concerns about plummeting values ( which I believe is already happening) ...... + you are using technology which is a little less damaging for the environment.

    Re: monduran a 4stroker in future ?

Steve B - It is not a fulse rumour it was a question if any body has heard of any thing that may happen as i will be purchasing a new boat in the future. Why moundran you ask? Because it is the only freash water dam that i chose to fish. Just trying to do a little research before I outlay my cash. Thats the reason why i gave it that heading. So that everyperson that fishes a dam from the border to the cape didnt have to respond to the dam they now best. Just after a simple answer which you gave about moundran. Quote ( we locals have not head anything about 2 stroke bans) Now i feel better about puchasing a two stroke . Cant aford a 4 banger just yet. And dont feel like doing the overtime to buy one.
