I'm not suggesting for a moment that everyone who walks through that door has had the same experience as me.
As you say, you shop there regularly (or often). I don't. Perhaps thats a factor to the person who served me.
I was in two minds about calling the owner today but simply ran out of time. I'll make a bit of an effort to call Ian tomorrow. As has been pointed out, to lose $400 to a competitor is hard to take.

I have found that store's staff to be friendly and helpful. There is fairly limited stock due to floor space but the service has been good whenever I have been there

    Re: Supporting the smaller guys?

I think they are reasonable blokes over there who are generally very helpful, but in my opinion it is just a bait shop now, not a true tackle shop. When it is 5am and you are on the way to the ramp and you pass by that shop it is a good place to stop for bait and the odd little bit of tackle (hooks, sinkers, swivels, bait jigs, plastics etc) that you need, but its just not even worth looking at rods and reels there because you will pay far too much compared to alternate purchasing opportunities.

Unfortunately that store is a victim of the chains as well, and unless they can bring their prices to be at least somewhere near the chain they can't compete.

I will pay a bit more for local loyalty to a small tackle shop, but I won't pay lots more... Money is too hard to earn to give it away.

    cheers

I have had both from that store. The old guy particularly is very friendly. But I have had the grunt reaction a number of times. Sometimes it is not a grunt per say, but just that feeling that my presence is an inconvenience.

    Re: Supporting the smaller guys?

A few peope have mentioned the probability of this thread comign to the attention of the manager/owner. IMHO that is the best possible outcome for everyone. Especially the owner and us as consumers.....

Were i a manager of a retail shop (of any type) i would take very careful notice of how fickle consumer loyalty can....

Going back to my previous post (read ramblings)

I guess what im am trying to say is I don't mind paying David Jones prices if you give me david Jones Service!

I would also love to hear about anyone else's outstanding service stories (especially from the smaller guys)....probably the best way we can support them is to tell everyone when we get looked after....

Anyway I'll jump off my soap box now...

    Re: Supporting the smaller guys?

I go to that store to get a paticular lure from time to time. Luckily I've always had good service. bloke must have been having a crap day. No excuse I know, especially when you get grunted at, but sometimes it would be hard to switch to friendly sales mode.
I get most of my gear at Jones Tackle, always have a good yarn with staff there. Friendly people and they always do their best to help me out.
I went in the other day looking for some waders, the bloke behind the counter had a good chat about the different types, he could have easily sold me the waders he had in store as I know nothing about them, but after telling him how often, where and how I fish, and the amount of walking I do to find my fish, he told me to hold off and think about ordering a pair of breathable waders...sure they'll cost me a lot more but after he explained it to me it made heaps of sense.... Good honest advice, thats why I go back.

Thumbs up Re: Supporting the smaller guys?

We hear about bad service, but take good service as normal (as you should) unfortuneately we don't get "many" posts on extremely good service from a store and or staff member. I work in retail and have had customers buy me cups of coffee and scratchies for simply going the xtra mile. I still may not get them the answer they wanted but at least I put in the effort. I have taken in scratchies for salesman who I thought "went the extra mile", as well as rang his boss as well to let him know he is employing people with the "right stuff", businesses are won or lost with staff having the "right stuff".

I am not sure if this forum allows the use of store names but if so, the tell us all the best places and names of staff for us to go to for help and advice, if I could save 20 bucks at kmart or spend 20 bucks extra at a small tackle shop and get the extra info and a general chat, then that is where I'll spend my money.

    Sorry for the long post.......

    Cheers Garry

    Re: Supporting the smaller guys?

Sorry I looked at my post and it looked like a story........ basically all I wanted to say was if you get really good service tell the guy then and there, tell his boss and if he has gone the extra mile, I reckon it is worth a 2 buck scratchie..........

    cheers Garry

garman1 I'm not sure whther we can use stores name to publicly thank them for good sevice I did in a previous thread and haven't heard anything yet... but i certainly wouldn't publicly bag someone...

But if anyone has a genuine compliment I say post the store name even the staff member name...it improves both their reputation and can only be a positive.

Perosnally i used to get really good sevice from Matt @ Tackle World wynnum before they shut down and recently have had good dealings with Duncan @Fishhead..

    Re: Supporting the smaller guys?

    Thanks Jim,

I also uplift a good store, by using my wallet. Also as for a store that lacks staff with good attitude, I have let the boss know and if I get the "what ever" response then I have also let my wallet do the talking for me. I will admit I have seen one marine store go down because of the "whatever' attitude. It is sad for the staff's family, but their situation came directly from the attitude at customer level. That is my two bob's worth anyway.

    Re: Supporting the smaller guys?

    Just an update.
I called the store and spoke to the owner.
I explained in detail taking, great care not to over exaggerate, exactly what happened when I visited his store.
He was genuinely surprised and apologetic. I actually felt quite bad - he seemed like a *really* nice bloke.
He explained this is NOT what he expects from his staff and that he will have a talk to the chap involved.
I actually am glad I spoke to him. Not necessarily so much about "ratting out" the guy on the front desck having a bad day,
but more so that I feel comfortable visiting the store again.

So thumbs up to this tackle shop for turning a bad situaiton into a good one and potentially gaining back a customer.
