    Gold Coast Tailor.

Went down to the spit on Saturday morning for a great Tailor session. I was using a 55gram slider lure. The bite was a bit slow at first as soon as it started to get light the fish came on. I managed to land 15 Tailor kept seven to 2.5 k'gs. I also scored a mack tuna from the beach which was a nice surprise, he pulled a lot harder than the Tailor.

All in all it was lot of fun on lighter gear. I tried the same spot on Sunday morning but the conditions had changed for the worse bigger swell which caused a sweep that was impossible to fish.

No Linds, the sliders work fantastically. My mate was using a 65 gram raider and he dropped a few right at the beach. The concept of the slider makes a lot of sense its a worthwhile piece of tackle that has improved my catch rate. The way the hooks set themselves in the fish is mouth I feel is a whole lot better than the treble system which has caused alot of swearing in the past when fighting the bigger sized fish to have them shake their head and spit the lure. Also the lure out fished the bait boys that morning probably because I could cast futher out to where the fish were holding. It was a bonus not to smell of a pilly for a change.

We heading to Fraser later this year i will contact you and buy some more. I gave a few to my uncle who lives in South Africa and fishes with them there he says he has been getting some real good catches using them.

Sounds like fun, well done. Any chance of a pic of the slider lure that did the damage? Next time the wind comes out of the west I should give it a go. Also, what rod and reel do you use for them? Perhaps my Alvey and surf rod are not the best choices for casting metal lures.

Gotto say I have been using the sliders from linds' for prob close to 18months or more , hookups will stick, casts will be longer and if yoiu catch and release 99% of your fish like ai do removing hooks and getting the fish back in the water in better condition is a given......

Alan, you are supposed to have lost all your sliders to chuck offs or bust offs by now.

They are a worthwhile piece of tackle I think also Surfsup. I would feel very, very uncomfortable using anything else on tailor. We used to use only trebles on them and results were still excellent, but I feel more confident on greenbacks with the opposite facing 4/0s and 5/0s.

Scalem, an alvey on a surf rod can do the trick just fine and particularly at this time of year when the tailor are on a spawning migration and tend to take fairly slow slugs. Often helps tho to hold the rod near vertical when using alveys, as this keeps the slug high in the water column. The same method can work at times when using fast spinning reels and to retrieve at alvey pace. I used alveys on normal tailor rods to spin and bait fish for years before changing to spinning reels and slightly shorter rods - 12 feet or thereabouts.

Happen to have a pic of a 55g slider. The tailor on the lure card was taken on the very first cast with the very first slider we made - Middle Rocks Rainbow Beach. I remember my thoughts when that pic was being taken - 'there's going to be a lot more tailor like this to come.'

Don't mean to hijack your thread Surfsup - hope you don't mind.

Surfsup, nice session mate, good to hear theres a few coming ashore at the moment. Sorry for the highjack.

Hey Lindsay your PM box is loaded up mate........

Heading to straddie this weekend and gonna chuck some sliders around and hopefully find a few tailor. Just want a feed not chasing greenbacks or anything, so what would you recommend as the best sizes to go for at the moment. I've got a couple about 30 or 40 grams but want to get a few more.

    Cheers mate.

    Re: Gold Coast Tailor.

    PM box emptied guys.

Bad news on Slider availability sorry guys - electroplater that has been chroming the sliders and a squillion other lures made by a well known local tackle manufacturer since day dot, has pulled the pin on us. And I've run out entirely of saleable slugs other than in 25 gram and so have the tackle shops tho Stuey at Wide A Wake Tackle Noosa Harbour has a few 65g left. Have even had to supply tarnished slugs to people I know that were desperate for them to chase tailor. I'm in a spot of bother myself - heading to north of Weipa at the end of the month and don't have (yet) the 40 and 45g slugs I normally use there on the queenies and gts. Am currently going through friends tackle boxes and borrowing back any sliders I find. Won't be back from the cape until the end of July, so it'll be early august before I have stock again for sale. I may arrange to paint some stock (white/red head) which we often did earlier in the piece and found worked as well as chromed, if a plater can't be found in the mean time..

I guess the above answers your question Plaztix - ie whatever you can lay your hands on. The sliders you have mate, would be stamped with either Slider 40 or Slider 55 and if not would be either the 45 or 65g. Sounds like you have 45g - which are actually 48g and is the slug I use most of the time for tailor. Any chance I can buy those back from you - just kidding.

Alternative slugs to use - which don't slide unfortunately, but change the trebles to opposite facing single 4/0s which will help a fair bit - would be Prickly Petes range of slugs. They're made with the same mix of lead and white metal as the sliders so cast further than raiders and the like due to greater metal density. 35 to 65g sizes are the ones I'd buy. Plated by the same electroplater, so may be in short supply also. BCF should have stock tho.

Bugger, mate that sucks. I know how much of a pain in a$$ it can be when a supplier leaves you in the lurch. Good luck finding a new one.

Might post in the tackle for sale section, 2 x sliders $50 each or best offer.

    Have a good trip.
