I didn't want to hijack another thread but got me thinking that a few people may be thinking of downsizing or selling up a few luxuries, like their boats, in the present climate of fuel prices. Some economists lately are predicting falls in housing prices, higher interested rates, etc., not to mention restricted fishing regulations that about to come in.
Yeah sure it may not be rosy over the next few years, but are you giving up something that's more valuable than you think, only because of the Doom and Gloom Merchants?
A mate of mine at a BBQ had a go at me for the lettuce I grew in my vegie patch. It would have cost me more in time, work, fertilisers, etc in growing that lettuce he said, and how about those fish you catch. Sure he's right, it's cheaper at the markets when you add up all your expenses but how much do you put a cost on the experience.
He got me so wound up I had to get it off my chest!!!
How do you put a cost on
... your child's face when she pulls up a great fish ?
... sitting by yourself on a glassed out day with the cool wind in your face (not much hair these days)?
... Having a family day out on the water?
... out with your mates for a fish and 'fish is only a bonus'?
... chasing that elusive PB?
Maybe you guys can add more to the list but sure if it meant between my boat and feeding the family, the boat is on borrowed time.
You need the extra money to do it but isn't the experience, what life's all about????

I just sold my 6m glass boat, it was sold because it didnt suitr my future plans as far as fishing goes. I still have my 12 tinnie with a 18hp tohatsu, its now my big boat. I scored a 10 foot tinnie with my camper.
Sold a boat 25 years ago due to hire purchase and being over commited and swore it would never happen again as all toys are now payed for with cash.
Can you put a value on boating, fishing and family, probable not as long as its in perspective with every thing else.

when i looked at my boat i looked at what was economical to run, can i handle it myself and how often will "I" be able to afford to take it out.
the way i see it, selling my boat isn't the answer because 2 years down the track i would want another one.. no one can see into the future and who knows fuel might drop back below $1 / L.. but i'm not holding my breath for that day to come.
To me a day out in my boat is the closest i can get to freedom in this day and age. I'm out there, looking around, cruising at 23kts, nearest traffic is 5km's away, not a care in the world, and have a chance to catch that PB like you mentioned.
Who could ask for more.

The fish you catch are probably cheaper if you buy them from the market.
Best you sell your boat,
Buy a playstation and dont go outside for fear of skin cancer
dont have any more than 4 standard drinks a day

They say you get out of life what you put into it. That bloke probably sits around bored sh!tless half his life, not prepared to do anything cause it costs effort & money. If he has kids I bet you they would love it if he had a boat or went to the effort of packing the car full of camping gear & getting away now & again.
And for anyone finding themselves in over their heads because of interest rates, its not a nice thing to say but interest rates were always going to go up - interest rates had been at 30 year record lows. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that this means that interest rates were guaranteed to return to at least average levels. Hate to think what may happen if interest rates move up to 30 year record highsIts completely possible, every day we hear on the news that the Reserve Bank is still worried about out of control inflation.
I've been in and out of boats, since I was 17. My boating ownership patterns seemed to follow milestones in life. eg Marriage, Job
and career changes
, older kids

My advise is to buy what you can afford at the time, be happy with it and be prepared to sell if you need to.
However always(took me until number 6 to realise) tell your Mrs, "yeh this boat will do for the moment, but might need to change in a few years. to a bigger one, or "yeh, I going to sell this one, but will get another one in a few years and keep reminding of that. Makes it much easier to get finance ministers approval should the need arises.
When I got my first boat my wife lit up and said $ 200 dollars !? you know how much fish we could buy with that? !, but the kids liked going out and exploring, as opposed to me leaving the family to go out for a surf, catch a few waves but bring nothing back, the family gets involed catch a few fish and all is good, I felt selfish till we got the boat, when the kids get bigger they can surf with me, and still be boyant
Saudi today said they were increasing oil supply because off the fear us consumers are rapidly trending to alternative energy.....
In an artical last week.. The USA public have came about with a backslashed at the oil companies... There simply not buying petrol, or better words are they have condiserably reduced the amount off petroleum they are using. Public transport, boi fuel, hybrid cars and the demand for full electric cars..... it was mentioned that one off the oil comapnies was losing a lot on stale fuel... They were making it but no one wanted it......

I ditched my job because of the fuel prices. Does that count? Basically because I use my own vehicle and pay for my own fuel making it a tax deduction, the increasing fuel prices have made it harder and harder to justify travelling an average of 150klms per day to make a living. The price of fuel has increased general grocery prices and numerous other costs of living so naturally the budget was getting increasingly tight. One more week to go and luckily a new job fell into my lab so I don't have to consider selling the boat just yet.

good the wifes went to do a washing . I mean the boat come first well you guessed the rest . I had thirty six years with a family & three & three quarters with a boat . got around eleven weeks to go till i get back from holiday and my fortieth year should start with a new boat . been one week without a boat & still have the family . not missing the family yet (lol)

I've got the solution, move to FNQ. The 16kg GT in my avatar was caught 7km off the coast, my rig used 8L of fuel for the return trip, at that rate fuel could be $10L and it's still a cheap day out. Oh hang on then i couldn't run the car to tow the boat!! Oh well off to buy the playstation etc thanks for the suggestion Rod.
