Short or long shaft outboard?
G'day
The title really says it. I have just bought a dehaviland 10ft flat bottom punt rated for 6 hp i do a lot of freshwater fishing what sort of out board do i get? and what is diff between long and short shaft any help would be gratefull. i have upgraded from canoe, getting to old for those long paddles. If anybodys after a 15ft canadian fibreglass with transon let me know. p.o.a.

most likely it would be a short shaft... difference between them is, funnily enough, the length of the shaft from upper head to lower gearcase. You need the size that matches the height of your boats transom... If transom measure around 15 inches, you need short shaft, if 20" you need a long shaft.
Further to this, some freshwater dams allow combustion (petrol engines) to be used, others do not. For those that do not, you can use electric outboards and you would want at least a 36lb outboard, but 44 or 52lb is always better... then of course you need a deep cycle battery for that electric outboard.
