Ross & I recently spent 12 nights at Karumba.
On our first fishing day we followed my brother (a regular Karumba visitor) out into the Gulf. We caught around 20 undersized grunter, I hooked a queenfish and got it to the side of the boat but I had a bad netman so the queenie lived to see another day! Finally Ross caught a 55cm grunter, so that was one for the freezer.
Second fishing day we headed up the Norman River and threw out a couple of lures. I caught a 60cm Jewel which we ate that night. (Sorry no pic)
Third day it was too rough to venture into the Gulf so we headed up the river again. We didn't catch anything but we did spot this fellow
The next week passed much the same as our third day.... too rough or no fish biting.... everyone talked of how the fishing would improve after the New Moon. During this time, my brother's mate gave us his catch so we had something else to put in the freezer
A couple of jewel's and a King salmon...
Seems the fishing wasn't great we put the crab pots in and managed to get one buck two days running then ran out of luck there too.
All was not lost though as there was plenty of birdlife to keep us entertained. We watched this Jabiru catch her breakfast.... but didn't fancy what was on the menu
Our holiday was fast coming to an end so on our second last fishing day we ventured back out into the gulf late in the afternoon, found the grunter were biting again and ended up with another 11 for the freezer ranging from 43cm to 52cm
Our last fishing day we went back to the same spot at sunrise and found one more grunter, then another 6 in the afternoon.
We stayed in a cabin at Gulf Country Caravan Park which put us about 350 meters from the Norman River boat ramp. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, very relaxing as there's nothing to do other than eat, sleep, drink, fish and talk about fishing
Oh, and watch the sunrise and sunsets!
Sunrise.... taken from the boat looking back at Karumba Point
Sunset over the Gulf.... taken at Sunset Tavern, Karumba Point
