Thread: ciguatera

    Re: ciguatera

    It would appear that ciguatera can be cumulative ie slow build up of the toxin. I suspect all of us living in the tropics proably have accumulated a degree of toxin within our bodies if we eat reef fish regularly.

    When we eat a fish with a lot of toxin we can either tip ourselves over the line in regards to being ' symptomatic'.

    We ' slowly' get rid of the toxin. I know guys who have had ciguatera before and they get mild symptoms on eating some reef fish clearly just tipping thmeselves over the line but not being really crook, many years down the track.

    Some people get really sick with an acute dose ' poisoned' clearly a heap of toxin from an infected fish at once, usually a big fish.

    Once again steer away from the big ones and dont eat too much of one fish especially if large. Share the love !!!!!

    If too big put it back take a photo especially those spaniards and trout.

    Re: ciguatera

    my sister got it from a 5kg trout off cairns and we all had some of it too, she was in a bad way for about 2 years still doesn't really eat much fish 4 years on.

    it wasn't a huge fish and none of the other fam members got it so thats a bit strange.

    if in doubt dont mess with it cause it gets pretty bad.....

    I know your tongue is in your cheek when you say this but I have had enquiries from persons believing that ciguatera is only linked to imported fish and we all know thats not true!

    Re: ciguatera

    In all the reading and research I have done with ciguatera, I have never heard of white vinegar killing it..

    What do you mean by it kills it Mangfish? Do you soak the fish in it? Do you cook the fish in it? Do you drink white vinegar after showing the symptoms? I don't quite understand?!?!??!

    Another article on Ciguatera I came across. Written by Dr David Hopley in F & B Magazine back in 2006. It is a PDF that you can open or download off the Seamedia site. The link is on this page;
