    Garmin Handheld 60C - help?

Can anyone help - I have a Garmin 60C handheld GPS - when I select a waypoint to go to from my current position: the map shows a straight line (as the crow flys) to this waypoint....can someone suggest a way of changing the settings so that when I am on the water it will show the path to follow by water....

I have been to the Garmin support site and my 'Routing' set-up - 'Guidance Method' is set to 'Off-road' - but still shows a straight line.....

Any help would be greatly appreciated.....

    Thanks

You will need to create a route of waypoints to follow if you want to follow any form of path that is not dead straight. Go through the menu and create a route.

Is it a GPSMAP 60c or a gps 60c? If its not a mapping one you will need a marine chart to take waypoints from or a Beacon to Beacon book.

It is a GPSMAP 60C - I am using Bluechart Pacific V9.5......I have created a route and understand what you are saying Jack - but I was hoping that I didn't have to continually create way points to guide me from one point to another....I was hoping that it would understand I am on the water and guide me through the beacons to the waypoint I have selected the best way....a bit like a car GPS that will tell you the path to take to get to a certain street - if you can understand that....

Its not possible on the water with current bluecharts (not sure if any gps charts offer that feature for that matter?). The marine maps arent coded the same as street maps. They would have to create "virtual roads" on all the marine maps for this to be possible... Of course this is probably possible to do if you were the map creators, but probably not likely that Garmin will do this.

If you are using Bluechart maps, why need a guide anyway? You know where you are going... just look at the blue chart on your screen and make sure you are going in the right direction from beacon to beacon! Otherwise, just make a route to follow before you go. If you need something like this for a trip out to begin with, then the trip will require pre-planning anyway for safe passage.

If you relied on the system to generate the route for you on the bay, would you always trust it anyway? Often it is not the actual "best route" to take, at least with street maps anyway, and when on the water there are a lot of variables to consider, like tides etc. The autoroute might send you the shortest way, but that way may take you through shallow water, and if it happens to be low tide at the time, it could be a beach party, if you know what I mean

Good and valid points BaitThrower......making waypoints and creating routes is the way then....
