    some uggly lure pic's

I've been promising to post some pictures of some lures I've been playing with on the lathe.

Not entirely happy with a number of things , mostly shape & colour, but I think I have a handle on the structrual parts.

the bigguns at the top were realy just a fiddle, they are both floating lures.

some feathers on the tail would be the go I recon.

the blue ones to the left are,
my first effort at a small popper.....the shape stinks.
the three that look the same, are except for weight, the top one floats the bottom one sinks.

to the right is a selection of casting plugs........i've given up painting those becaue sooner or later they end up in a tree or making a bid for freedom when the line breaks.

the silver and red one is my

    secret wepon..... shhhh

I call it a big lump of nothing.
It is designed to barely float while giving some extra casting weight.
if you chuck it in the water it floats to the red line.

the idea beeing that when you want to fish light but realy want to make some extra distance you tie on a "big lump of nothing"

if you want to make it neutraly bouyant or sink a couple of split shots will do the trick.
I have cast this & it works a treat...... it was too windy to be usefull the day I took it out though.

    cheers

The biggest problem is finding a life like silver and blue.

I think to get that " pilchard" look I'll have to go with a white background and mist some silver & blue and follow with some clear.

the red and white ones were done with cheap spray tins (which is enamel) and the finish is too jammy & soft.

the lesson is to stay with laquer.

if it was a metal item I'd bake it in the oven but the timber & epoxy wont cop that.

They look great....and I like the shape of the popper.
I wonder if some sort of thin metal foil could be glued onto the big ones and covered with a nice heavy lacquer to give a flashing pilchard look.
Art supply shops sell all sorts of cool paint that would look great on lures.
It sure would be fun painting some of those.

Get some metallic silver auto paint and spray the lures through a cotton net to give you a scale pattern.

Here's some of my home mades, you can see the scale pattern.

    Cheers.

coming along nicely there oldboot. I have ambitions of making bibless stickbait-style lures on the lathe one day too. I suppose experimentation is the key in getting the right shape.

I have started making poppers on my lathe too, and the shape isn't too difficult, it's the finishing that has me at 6's and 7's.

Here's my best effort thus far, though the image quality is shocking 'cos I just whacked the lure into a scanner. It was the best I could do without a digital camera.

ffejsmada, what sort of finish do you apply to your great looking lures, both to seal the wood, and to clear coat over the final paint job?

    Thanks,

If anybody wants to give the big boys a go send me a PM. as I'm unlikley to get anywhere there is a fish bigenough to eat either of them.

From my point of view the basis for the finish is easy enough, I'm convinced the best option is a couple of coats of marine epoxy such as west system or boat coat, followed by a good sand.
the top coat has to be at least acrilic laquer.......

the big problem is working out and obtaining the right colours.

I have been playing around painting up some old lures and have been using cheap nail polish with the glitter in it. Comes up well and is hard. Plenty of colours and at $2/bottle.

Fair effort there. An air brush would be great at giving you shades and patterns.
