    Bay feed

    Hi all
braved the conditions yesterday and made our way through the fog over to moreton. Got a feed of good sized winter whiting that were really pulling hard for some reason. They also seemed to be keener on the thin squid strips rather than live blood worms go figure. Also pulled a dozen or so sandies....two of the bucks were the biggest i have seen in years.

Other points of note....dropped a good schoolie on a floating pillie boat side but didnt see much bird or fish action all day save some fish busting up a few ks north and west of mud.

I also tangoed with a 3-4ft shark on the pillie, when i set the hooks he exploded out of the water 2m or so in the air. At that point the line went slack and i thought he was gone but after rapidly winding in the slack just in case i found that i was still connect to it and after seeing my first swivel appear i looked down to find the shark sitting just under the bow of the boat. Fought it straight up and down for a bit before being bitten off.

At the end of our drifts we caught a couple of what i think were what grant's calls a yellow lipped butterfly bream
    http://www.austmus.gov.au/fishes/fis...ntheodorei.htm
i have never come across them before and grant says they are commonly caught by line fishermen targetting snapper and red emperor? I have no idea what sort of bottom we were fishing as my sounder is still on the blink but in the same little spot i caught a little venus tuskfish and a little squire...have i stumbled across some rubble do you think...and do big tusk fish hang out with little tusk fish or am i getting ahead of myself here.

well this report has turned out longer than expected...sorry but i need to aid my procrastination of uni study where i can.

Ive also caught them with whiptail
Theodore's Threadfin Bream is usually found on sandy and muddy seabeds in coastal and offshore waters in depth from 20 m to 120 m.
Them cheeky sharks coming up for a look around gets your heart racing
    even the little ones

Ioften go to moreton two dogs might see you there
    ill look for the boat

two dogs, i was out there as well yesterday, worst conditions for ages eh......
i found the whiting bit better on plastic worms than squid, only caught half a dozen on squid, rest on plastic worms
due to work commitments i left just before midday, were you out there with another boat close to you most of the morning?

we were on our lonesome all day...there was a group of smaller boats together a fair way north of us...ive never tried plastic worms...how do you fish them.

how big did yours go...grants says they are good eating. Ours were just big enough that if i knew what they were they would have provided some decent sized fillets

two dogs we landed some 22cm to26cm maybee 28cm
all went back the same as the hussa/husser but i think
both would be good on the chew
I think i will be trying next time

    if i catch anymore

use plastic worms same as sandworms....i cut worm into 4 pieces and thread onto the hook............
what i like about the plastic worm is if the whiting are not biting, you dont lose your bait, just try to get the air out of the packet and reseal it, good as gold next time you go to use them.......
my son inlaw has caught a 5.2 kg snapper on a plastic worm, obviously using a bigger hook.......

    Re: Bay feed

thanks for that robsue...how do they stand up when the fish are biting...like how many fish can you land on the one bait and whats the cost like compared to live worms...i must admit the grubs we got the other day were of excellent quality...best ive seen in a long time.

plastic worms are $9-90 packet of 10, i usually buy a few packets when on special ,25% off ......
caught 93 wednesday, used about half a packet, just have to rethread on hook sometimes after whiting bite on them.......
