Noosa River Catfish

Does anyone know anything about eating Catfish, caught in the Noosa River.
Can you eat them? I know they have dangerous spikes to avoid.
They would be saltwater catfish, eventhough there is fresh water that comes down from head of the Noosa River. They are nice and plump and plentyful. After we caught some we used them as crab bait - no luck. Then heard on TV that they market Catfish overseas.

I personally would not eat catfish.

Vastly under-rated..............even Grants has 'em as a decent table fish. Easy as to fillet due to the armour plating, but only expect a fillet about one third the size of
the fish.

You must skin 'em or they will taste as bad as they look.

They do farm them in the US.
'Friday night fish fry' was massive in the area where I lived. Every restaurant and pub, and any where that had a kitchen had Friday fish fry. It was almost always catfish. Frozen fish in the supermarket? Catfish.

A big difference, however, is that the farm raised catfish weren't as 'muddy' as their wild counterparts.

If I caught one, I'd give it a shot. At least the once, anyway.

As far as I know , you gotta clean 'em extremely well, like cleaning Carp.

i'd just stick to the facts. the facts are that they are just a stinking catfish, you might aswell eat a freshwater eel, not that theres anything wrong with that

Sometimes the weather is not good enough to catch the snapper and cobia at sea.
While crabbing up the Noosa River sometimes waiting for your pots, all you catch is catfish. Trying to read my book I am constantly disturbed by Catfish, so lets eat the pricks and and use the excess for the next lot of crab bait.

Thanks for your info. I appreciate your support. I reckon they'd to alright.
I'll give them a try next time we fishing the Noosa River, in a couple of weeks time.
Sounds like dressing the clean fillet in some beer batter or the asian Tampura Mix would be the go.

Yeah I reckon there under-rated too. When I did cut open the fish to use a Crab Bait, I thought, wow that does look like nice flesh.
Will give them a try next time. Fish caught in the Noosa River has got to be free of any chemicals, it is so natural, it is all National Park, no farms or chemical run off comes into the river.

Reckon I'll get my husband to do the taste test and give it 24 hours.
He'll eat anything I cook and tell me it's good.
It must be the wine I give him beforehand.
