Advice/Tips on Silver trevally
hey guys
found a nice lil spot bout 30mins drive north of my home on the central cost where silver trev seem to be going off.
Was fishing for around 9 hours straight last saturday and managed to land 4 decent sized fish but dropped probably 15-20. also hooked two monsters, not sure if they where trev or not but they put up one hell of a fight, so much so i couldnt control them and they ran straight into the rocks.
Just after any advice/tips for increasing my hook up rate, landing chances etc im not out to butcher everything i catch but i'd love to get a photo or at least look, at those big ones. My muscles are still aching
Happy Days

Re: Advice/Tips on Silver trevally
Silver Trevally have quite a small and very soft Mouth, so a smallish hook and not too much drag is needed, otherwise you will either not hook any, and if you do, you will pull the hooks because of too much drag, so you need to be careful but firm, if that is at all possible.

as said before becarefull with your drag settings because often the trevally and soft blubbery lips and you can pull the hook straight out. if its flats you are fishing fish about a 0.75-2kg drag if struture up the ante and try to drag them away. don't be afraid to throw some plastics and small poppers around as silvers when the bite is on go nuts after something with a medium to fast retreive.

Re: Advice/Tips on Silver trevally
Easy on the drag is the go, i agree
I catch a lot of dart but not a huge number of trevs. Although they are a bit smaller, the same tactics apply, they have very soft mouths, and if you reef them in, you will drop them. Best to play them out.
If they are powering for the rocks, they may be kingies, but otherwise, ease into some decent sideways pressure to turn their heads.
good luck mate

Re: Advice/Tips on Silver trevally
We used to catch a lot of silvers in the bay near the dock on the inside of Montague island. They are suckers for burley,we used striped tuna . We used small hooks ,size four, and fished lightly weighted cubes of tuna in the burley trail on four and six pound line. Good fun and ok to eat if bled and iced. Cheers Imfiik.
