    ETec Question

I recently extended my battery leads and now when I start my motor (40hp ETec) I have the following things happen ...

    . Turn key
. Display lights come on, turn off one by one and beeps
. Start motor with key (no worries)
. Display lights come on again, turn off one by one and beeps

I cannot for the life of me remeber if the lights and beeping sequence used to happen twice (once before I start the engine and once after it is going). It bothers me that maybe the cables are causing a voltage drop under load and the engines elctronics are resetting - even though it does not appear to affect the running.

Can any ETec owner out there please tell me whether the sequence happens twice for them.

    Thanks,

    Dave

    Re: ETec Question

    hi,
i have a 90 e-tec and when i fitted a second battery and isolator switch i experienced the same thing. mine does it some of the time but mainly with the second battery? i have asked brp and dealer and general opinion is that it has something to do with voltage drop. brp said to check battery terminals. my number 1 battery is 720 cca and my second battery is 600 cca (mainly used when anchoring but i do start motor with it to charge it up). my battery terminals are the cleanest you will ever see, tight and cables are connected with nylocks (not wing nuts). everything is perfect so now i have got used to it and do not worry at all.

    cheers,
    nick.

    Re: ETec Question

If you really want to ask an etec question go to this forum and a guy called Huey who appears to be an etec technician from Sydney will probably tell you anything you want to know. Also other specialist etec people....good forum to use if an etec owner http://forums.etecownersgroup.com/mb/barnaclebill

    Re: ETec Question

I'm not sure whether or not I understood your question 100% but here goes!

When you turn the key to the half-way position, the EMM will automatically run a SystemCheck procedure and sound a single audible alarm while the four lights run through. If you refer to your Owner's Manual, it explains the process in more detail.

Subsequently, if you then turn the key to on from this position and start the engine, it will again run another SystemCheck. This is normal.

If you go from the off position straight to turning the engine on however, it should only carry out one SystemCheck.

A mechanic like Huey would better answer your question though.

    Re: ETec Question

id also check ur manual as stated above. If it dont say anything about that sequence then Id be stuffed. I cant imagine that extending the leads would cause any problem though. How much did you extend them?

About 5m, mounted the battery in the nose to get some weight forward. I used 100 amp cable which I believed would be heavy enough.

I figured it was best not to go straight through to cranking the engine.

Thanks for all the info everyone, looks like it is not a problem and maybe I need to do a bit more reading of the manual.
