The Pin, 4 reports in 1, 3 PBs

For those of you that don’t know I’ve got 6 mths off work due to breaking all the ligaments in my right shoulder, so with nothing much else to do, I’ve decided to go fishing every chance I get.

But due to my computer playing up I’m going to post all 4 reports in one. All trips were to the pin and except for the last trip I left the boat ramp around 6.00am.

Trip 1. I first went out to the bar to throw some lures around for tailor, for no results. Then moved down to Kalaga bank, after half hr with no results and not seeing any other boat pull in a fish, it was time to make a move. Headed to Coby Coby passage again with no luck.

Decided to head to a little spot that has rarely let me down. After throwing back a few small bream one of my rods just about jumped out of the boat, this fish is all over the place, it at the surface then down deep then to my right then out the back, after a few minutes into the net comes a Tailor. With my single hook in the corner of its mouth. It went 40 cm a new PB.

Trip 2. Again I went to the bar to have a look for some tailor, with the same result. this time I decided to head straight to the little creek. It started off slow as this place dose, but after putting on a pilly, and casting it out I was on straight away. At first I thought that I had hooked a sting ray as when this thing wanted to go I could only hang on, but the runs were to short and it wasn’t sitting on the bottom like a ray, plus there was a lot of head shacking going on. After a few minutes and much to my surprise a very large flathead rose up out of the water, after a few more tense moments I had her in the net. She went 78cm and equalled my PB. A quick pic and back she went. This fish was caught with in 20m of were I caught the last one.

As the tide changed I moved around a few times, but due to the wind I ended up casting back towards where caught the flathead. At this stage I was starting to run low on bait n with the bait fish everywhere I quickly grabbed my cast net, a small winter whiting was my only catch. After cutting it up for bait I was left with only the head, with nothing to lose I put it on and cast it out.

After ten minutes with no results I decided to bring it back into cast it somewhere else, it wasn’t to be as a flathead has had had a go at it and managed to hook itself in the eye.

After putting the flathead in the esky, I noticed that the whiting head was fine so back in it went. With in 5 minutes, the rod tip slowly doubled over and I was onto something, I knew it wasn’t a ray but it was big. At one stage I managed to pull it in far enough to get a look at it but I couldn’t make out what type of fish it was, then I dawned on my that I was looking into the mouth of good sized cod. It really played up at the boat so it took my a while to get it into the net. At 50cm it was a new PB, I was wrapped.

End result was 1 cod to 50cm, two flathead 40 to 78cm and half a dozen bream.

Trip 3. This time with a friend Vin, again we went out to the bar, with lots of bait fish showing I thought that I would be in for a chance of tailer, but it wasn’t to be.

So back to my little creek we went. Vin was the first off the mark with a bream that went 27cm. A short drift later and I found myself casting back into the same sport where I had caught the cod the week before.

It wasn’t long until something grabbed my bait, it had good weight then nothing. Thinking to myself that I bet the fish had broken the line and there is no hook on the end, sure enough the hook was missing. It was then that I realised that I was using the wife’s rod and her knots tying skills are not the best, so it was on with a new hook and back into the same with the same result, this time I stayed connected.

After a few minutes I looked at Vin and said I think I’ve got a ray as I can feel this bump, bump coming up the line as the side of it is hitting the line. Boy was I wrong and into the net came a lovely cod, the same size as the first 50cm. And it had the first hook and bait stuck in it’s mouth.

End result for our trip was 1 cod to 50cm and 5 bream to 27cm.

Trip 4, Saturday night. This time I was very lucky to make it into the creek as it has a very shallow bar, and if it wasn’t for the wind blowing against the tide I wouldn’t have made it in at all.

As I had arrived just before dark n there was no moon and not wanting to put the spot light on the water, a few moves was called for, before finding the sport I was after. Putting a small pilly onto a gang of 2 3/0 hooks I made a blind cast into the darkness. This time the rob tip was nearly broken as a fish grabbed the bait as I had another rod in my hands all I could do was pick up the rod and strike before jamming it into a rod holder and bring in the first fish. This didn’t quite work out as the fish on the second rod dropped off half way into the boat.

As I picked up the second rod I just knew I was onto a ray as I was only fishing in about 1.5m of water, and I could feel the bump bump bump up the line. My thoughts that I was a ray grew stronger when it made as run into what i know is very shallow water. At this stage I was very tempted to pop the line as I wasn’t in the mode to play with a big ray. As it neared the boat I caught sight of what I thought was the rays tail, only to realise that I was some weed that had wrapped around the line, it still had few more good runs in it. At this stage my arm was getting sore and really didn’t care if I got off or not as it would only be trouble when I got it next to the boat.

Lucky for me I bought it up next to the boat near the anchor light, instead of the big flat shape of a ray, all I saw was a long shape with brown stripes down the side, COD and a big one. At this stage only one thing was on my mind, where the hell is my net. A quick looked showed me that was close at hand, not to hard as I’ve only got a small boat. And into the net it went.
It measured 62cm, don’t know the weight but I’m guessing 3 to 4 kg. That’s 3 cod with in 10m of each other.
Will try to put the picks up, haven’t done it before so hopefully it works.

84mick, i caught the 3 fish on 3 different rods but apart from the main line (10lb, 12lb and 14lb) the setup was the same with a sinker above a swival, then a 30cm lenght of 15lb leader, with a 2/0 bait keeper hook, was using a 5cm fillet of Gar as bait, for the first 2 fish then a pilly for the third.
