figjam
Have a look at The pics in Smithy's last post, I reckon that's a Groper.
Does look like a Brown groper hey Jeff....
Which are the same species.

Jesus Nug, do you want to catch every species alive?? if you do get Blue Groper up there, I can tell you, then you will know what Fishing is, there is hardly a fish alive that can pull like a good sized Blue Groper, use fresh/live crabs close to shore late afternoon coinciding with a high tide, glue your shoes to the rocks, good stiff rod, 40LB line and hang on!
would they be the same ones as in WA? they call the blue bone over there

Arent Blue Groper protected?

Off topic but... I think I saw a show on pay tv once, a couple of pommy fellas who were doing something similar. They had about 30 fish species, basically nearly everything you could catch in freshwater ponds and rivers in the UK. They gave themselves a month to catch one of every species on the list and they travelled the countryside in a van full of fishing gear. One of the fish I saw them tick off the list was smaller than a grinner's breakfast . Thank god I live in Australia.

Fishing for the thrill, not for the kill
Yeah.....They are one fish that change sex.
They all start life as females and then some change into the big Male blue gropers.
I got demolished a few times off sydney.
The Gun bait is the RED rock crab which you have to dig for in crevices etc.
I managed a few small browns but never got a big blue out.
They love sea urchins as burley too....
They are a seriously powerfull fish.
Hey Noelm....What is the boundary for Black drummer..?
Where do they stop along the coast.....?...How far North..?
They are a top fighting fish which I loved catching....Shame they are not here.
I reckon they fight much harder than Jacks.
Pete
Pete,
You got that right....they would pull a jack backwards. Not everything in Qld is bigger or better than anywhere else. I have seen guys on their knees locked up with 50lb line trying to stop a 5kg pig on the ocean rocks. And they dont always win
Greg
not too sure of the full extent of a Black Drummers Northern habitat, but I know for sure that at least two live at Caloundra, because I have caught them, so they must be there in some sort of numbers, unless I was just very lucky (which I doubt) caught them on the Rocks from the shore near that Island looking Reef complex, maybe called Brays or something like that. Perhaps there is a couple of "Rock hoppers" on here can tell us for sure!
From my time years ago fishing the sunshine coast the best way to target them is to go snorkeling, spend a day doing reckies of all the headlands/rockfishing areas and write down what you see and where.
Then target those areas with crabs as bait, most never see one of these fish on their lines because they fish incorrectly, there can be 50 of these pigfish around and the bloke fishing with pillies would never know.
Great fun and great eating, keep you crab off the bottom!
cheers fnq
In the Illawarra region of the NSW Coast Black Drummer and BIG Blue Groper are very common, but as mentioned, only caught by those who fish specificaly for them, there is a few odd ones caught by "accident" but as a general rule, unless you fish with fresh or live Crabs with the Correct gear, then you will almost never see one, there is plenty of them around, and some big ones, and by big I mean 15 to 20KG and bigger, the chance of getting one from the "stones" would be almost nil unless blessed with extreme good luck, almost the same applies to Drummer (Black), the better eating of the two, you need to be fishing right in the Wash to get any, hurl your line out to buggery and you will get none, Black Drummer are fine Eating and would rival a few of the more fancied Tropical species, the Silver Drummer grows much larger and is not so flash in the Eating department, though some do Eat them, they also provide some awesome pulling Power to those that have hooked up to a good size specimen, so there you go, not too sure how many are to be had from the Sunny Coast, but I will be up there again in a few weeks and will give them a try and let you guys know how I went, one thing I can tell you for sure, if anyone tries to Fish for them and is successful, a lot of other Fish fights will pale into obscurity by comparison, don't care what species it is!
