for fishing along breakwalls in rivers I was thinking 4-6b flurocarbon leader...does this sound about right??

Once again thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread!

    4-6lb is good for leader.

I use the 6lb from rocks.

I used 6 lb mono for main and leader too. Back then Id never heard of fluro.

If the split shot is too close to the hook, that will put em off too. Leave the hook about 2 ft from the bottom split shot.

Seeing a good rig is half the job.

I prefer to use sheet lead rather than split sot, as it is softer and tends not to damage the light line as much. Even better if you connect your leader to main line with a small black swivel and run a ball sinker matched to the ideal weight for the float above the swivel - with the tiniest piece of lead on the leader to help stop the baitfrom wrapping the float during the cast - which is in itself an art form. A good tip is to pre weight your floats, or have a bit of line attached to them with the right lead on it. You may need several different floats for a session depending on the run in the tide/wind/water condition/wave action, and you dont want to muck around experimenting with weighting the floats when the fishing window is limited. Always use a sliding float stop above the float....the little rubber ones are ok...but check em BEFORE each outing as they perish very quickly. You will need to adjust your float depth many times during a session to stay within the feeding zone....and also to find that feeding zone in the first pace. Another trick is to watch for an 'up' rather than a down. this is where the fish is taking the bait and moving up the water column rather than down or away. This indicates that you are fishing to deep. Also a bit of line floatant for the first ten metres above your float will keep the line on the surface and allow you to remain in direct contact with your float.

    Cheers

    Interesting read guys,
I have been fishing the sunny coast for these things for the past 25 years and every year more and more people join the blackfishing family. for the past few years i have been shooting video and documenting these buggers which is due to be released in august..
we have tagged hundreds of them, but never had a tag returned.
over the years not much has changed in the way i fish. i am still using my trusty old avon royal which now is spooled with 40lb braid because it floats and also saves me loosing a few fingers. 6lb pound fluro carbon will out fish any other form of trace line. attach this to a mustard 540 anywhere from a size 6 to a 10 depending on the feeding mood of the fish. if your up for some amazing fishing try fishing the snags along bribie up near the blue hole in Caloundra. It's all sight fishing as your catching them in 2 to 4ft of water. I am quite happy to take people out and show them what to do and as for chasing bait send me a pm and i will let you know where to find it.

I know that spot rather well, I imagine you can only fish there during the very top and bottom of the tide considering the speed of current there? Very good post, I'm sure the dvd will be very interesting. What do you make of not seeing any of your tagged fish again? Migration or decline in numbers or some other reason?

No the fish seem to bite on all tides over there depending on the moon. you just tuck in behind a snag where you can see the fish and fish the eddies. I'm not sure to the reason why no tagged fish have been returned. Being that most fish here are caught on there spawning run it may have something to do with there migration paterns. alot of the fish do come from outside but also alot of them do head back up the creeks. as for numbers we had several days there last year where we released well over the hundred mark. Also the diving footage i have been taking show that the schools extend the entire lenght of the snags as well as from just inside the bar all the way down almost to tripcony jetty and along in front of the sailing club. There are also plenty of other places we have caught quite good numbers in the canals, military jetty down at the mouth of bells creek along the weed banks in summer. So it's hard to say but there numbers don't seem to be declining as much as some other species in there. That also may be due to the fact that not a lot of peple target them.
