i have a dvd from a book that i got, the escape with et beginenrs one(i think) on there it had a section of them catching them on what is called cabbage weed, they only lobbed the baits about max 10m from the rock wall they were fishing. they seem to pull a few. i think they recomended using size 10 hooks, light line, pencil float and whippy rods. best of luck to you nugg and i hope you pull a few big ones.

    regards,

silver drummer pull very hard...excellent sportfish...but crap in the eating stakes. Black drummer pull almost as hard.....but one of the finest eating fish in the sea. Didnt know you could get them this far north. I have been wondering also about getting Luderick up here....one of my favourite types of fishing and one of my preferred eating fish. I live in scarborough and would be quite amenable to a trip chasing niggers, if i knew where to get good weed and potential spots. I was taught ny some wily old timers how to catch these buggers and would be glad to pass on what little i know.

    Cheers

Seahunt is on the money. take a few different types of weed, and try it at different depths. 6-10 ft, runout, close to rock banks is ideal nugg.

dont forget the burley. Mix it up with 1 part burley to 3 parts damp sand, keep it in a bucket, and throw it down hard at the water, a handful every few minutes. The sand helps it get to the bottom. After a while, you can just chuck plain sand down, and fish will come up to inspect it.

Never use weed anymore than twice the size of the hook. Blackfish have a small mouth.

    cheers

Are there any sugar cane farms locally to you? If there is, get in contact with the owner and ask him if he has any black weed in his cane drains. This can usually turn a dead day into a productive day. They usually get green weed in their drains as well.
I've just started fishing again this season, got 15 on sunday gone, 9 on monday and another 9 on tuesday. Just gotta wait till the tides are right again.
I think your best bet to learn would be to gee up a session with pete. Even if its only to see EXACTLY how his gear is rigged which is half the battle.
    Good luck

Hey Mattooty, Nuggstar and everyone else....been following this thread very closely!! I have been trying to crack the luderick code for the last few years with much frustration and little success. I think I have the rig set up ok, but my understanding of bait and tides is letting me down. So two questions:

    1. What is the best tide for targetting these guys (say in the Tweed River) - outgoing (top, middle, bottom)?

    2. Is store-bought green string weed decent bait? I have been told that scraping the algae/weed that grows underneath/on pontoons is worth a crack as well.

Hope someone can help this lame luderick loser!

    Cheers all,

    Simmo

I have almost exclusivly fished the runout Tide only, from about half out onwards, but I don't think they go on a diet in between, it's just that's was what I was taught by the experts, and it works for me, you will also be very surprised how close to the edge you will get them, a long cast is not required, if fishing in a channel, let your float drift along the weed bank edges for best results, or near deep gutters along rock walls, and just walk along with your float, once you find fish, they will be there almost all of the time, weed is a bit of an Art in itself, what looks like good Weed, will be snubbed by experts, might take a bit of trial and error in your area to see what they like, they will also change diets at certain times of the year, and during Summer (down here) you will get them on Squirt Worms and a very small sinker.

Go the weed or cabbage. Unless you want to add drummer to the list.

Think about catch and release, the're around but only in very small numbers compared to the early 80's when they used to get flogged. Sure keep a couple but I don't think they'll be around the sunny coast for long if we collect them with to much vigor. Other than that, I'm of the old school and my lips are sealed.

Not really an issue mate. I've been fishing with Nugg for nearly two years now and he's never kept a fish in any of our sessions. We're both sportfishermen first and foremost.

Mate I've never fished for them, but I do know that the latest issue of Modern Fishing, the one with a big black drummer on the cover, has an article on baits, and has pics of both the weeds used for them. Hope this is of some help.

Used to fish for them alot down Port Stephens way with my Grandfather before he got too old to get on the rocks. He is a master. He used to spend hours collecting cabbage weed and bread for burley and String weed for bait. The string would be plaited onto a #8 hook. After a while we started using bread to catch the monster blue nosed bream that would eat the burley. We never went back to using weed for bait. The bread would catch bream, mullet, drummer and darkies equally. Even got a misguided brown groper one day. The other posts saying to use very lightly weighted floats are right, also fine traces. Huge hauls were had using this method with days of over 50 fish upto 2kg for a few hours not unusual. And getting smoked by the drummer and bream on light line all the while. Haven't done it for years now. Thanks for the memories.

We had some MASSIVE days as well on bread.
When we burleyed heavily for Drummer with bread, the blackfish would go crazy.
Although, using bread to catch them takes the art of blackfishing away.
When they start eating bread its just to easy to catch them.
Much more satisfying to catch them when they are slightly timid and you fool them with cabbage or weed.
