Hi all, new to ausfish and dont really know what im doing but has anybody got any opinions about Tohatsu outboards? There is a boat for sale with 140hp 2005 model on it and i have been offshore fishing for many years and never really heard much about them? Anyone ever owned one? or know anything about them?

Yeah thats what i was told about the rescue boats.... sounds promising....owner said every mercury under 35hp is made by tohatsu?...
I had a 15HP Merc & it was a rebadged Tohatsu. Ran well, started easily, no more to add as there was never a problem.
ROLL TIDE, ROLL.................

I've had a 30hp for 7 years.
Never missed a beat.
Would definitely buy another.
G'day
Toheys are a good engine, only thing that will shy people from them is the apparent warranty and support from the aussie distributor.
Btw, NOT every merc under 35hp is a tohey, only some. The JAP versions of the merc are tohatsu, whilst the US versions are merc. You do get a choice in those smaller models.

I am on my second tohatsu,a 2007 40hp,the first was an 18hp on a 12ft tinny, both motors have performed extemely well and are very reliable,I would recomend a tohey to anyone.
Cheers Craig
im with PETERBO3 my dad had a 15hp merc on his quinnie 3.85m explorer. was as PETER said a rebadged tohatsu. my uncle is and outboard mechanic and he had a look over it and noticed that it was actualy rated at 18hp as a tohatsu but 15 as the merc. was a great engine tho never missed a beat in all the time we fished from the boat! so yeah i'd recomend one ,JAYVEE
I don't have any first had experience with them, but have heard a lot of praise and very few problems with them. Very reliable, but a little thirsty is the general consensus.
They must be good though, as the surf life saving clubs use them, and look how they smash through/over waves in their ducks, so they can certainly take a lot of punishment.
Dont see many that size around the traps. Its the biggest motor they make currently. As many have said a well trusted motor with a good reputation. Cheaper than the competition so resale suffers a bit but otherwise as good as any other in my view.
I have a 90TLDI and would consider another tohatsu easily.
I also have a TLDI 90 hp and wouldn't hesitate buying another one.
As for fuel economy, I recall that their 70hp standard 2 stroke was rated as the most fuel efficient on the market a few years ago. My TLDI 90 uses less fuel than a mate's 90 Honda on a similar hull, so am very pleased with the economy. Mate also had a 140 (same model you are looking at) on a Webster and never mentioned any concerns about fuel economy.
All Toeys are made in Japan (quality) and as some others point out, they do also make smaller motors for Merc and some other manufacturers.
Top motors, lots of pro fishers use them in FNQ too.

Yeah mate the surf rescue bloke's use them! this means they are extremely reliable otherwise they wouldnt use them as they are dealing in peep's live's! I myself was gonna buy one (40hp) but settled on a 40hp johnno due to budgeting reasons, personally I would have gone the brand spanker tohatsu if the funds allowed but with mrs + kid's along with rising interest rates and car fueling bills made me go a cheaper 2001 johnno, love the johnno but!!! and yes only ever heard good things about tohatsu.

Cheers all....great feedback...sounds like boat is almost worth its price in motor alone...thanks again
