    Smile Townsville sweetwater barra

Headed north from townsville for the weekend camping and doing a little 4WD'ing exploring the beautiful creeks that we are surrounded with.

Found a few nice fishing holes to come back to... although got tempted by one and was given 10 min's as we were on a tight time line.

I took a look at the oversized tackle i had came with, being 30lb braid, 40lb trace and a selection of large lures. With only 10mins to fish i decided against re-tying a lighter leader and i started flicking a SP into the snags, which resulted in no interest at all from anything other then a couple of twigs and a leaf. I dug deep deep into the tackle box and found a couple of smaller lures and was suprised to find an old crawdad in there.

Quickly tied it on and began working the snags with the lure. it took a while to raise some fish, but the rattle seemed to wake the fish and i began to witness numerous strikes in the crystal clear water, however, the hook up rate was slow.

I'm still trying to get used to watching fish strike the lure and respond at the correct time.

First 2 strikes were from small jacks sized between approx15-12cm.. then the barra came out to play. I had 5 consecutive cast's with 5 consecutive missed fish, then on the 6th time i got lucky and managed to land my first freshwater barra. Only small, but it goes to show how healthy the waterways are. after a quick photo, there was time for 2 more casts, both casts resulted in missed strikes again.

left me with food for thought, and the missus has told me we have to return soon....

    Hi Josh,

Congrats on the barra. I reckon exploring that country north of here and then finding a few fish is as much fun as the offshore stuff.

    Regards,
    Dave.

    Gday Josh,

Good stuff mate. Always good to see that our fisheries are looking pretty healthy for the future.

I was fishing a creek to the north a couple of weeks ago and couldn't get over the amount of juvenile jacks. Lots of strikes, no hookups, but it doesn't really matter when you are fishing in gods country

    G'day Josh,
I've caught plenty of freshwater barra half that size again up in Crystal Creek. Surprised me too first time it happened.

    Cheers, Andrew
