Not that i have ever fished in NZ but i've seen DVD's of people catching snapper in NZ that look exactly the same as the snapper we catch in OZ. Just usually alot bigger
How can those kiwi's defame such a beautiful fish by naming that ugly beast after them.
Just went flicking through some Kiwi fishing websites and found a few more photos of kiwi snapper.Seems there not all that dark but there are no nobbys even the bigger fish. The head shape(sloping),lips(large) and tail shape appear to be a trademark of kiwi snapper.According to the website small snapper are called 'bream'.
Mex
been over there twice now and caught snapper over 7kg and I can tell you first hand the nobs are missing and they look like dirty big pink bream.
the fish I have caught in the bay of Islands were bright like ours here but I think they get darker the further down the you fish in nz.
no different to eat or catch , just the nobs are missing but there's plenty of nobs fishing for them...lol
pickers
They're nicer looking snaps mexikan. Still a lot different shape to NORMAL snapper though hugh. (much rather ours)
Are these different shape kiwi snaps mainly caught in a specific area of NZ, cause i have definately seen snapper caught in NZ that look exactly like ours. (big nobs, tapered bodies)
Or maybe it was a bunch of Kiwi's claiming to be fishing NZ
Here is one that my brother in law caught in February, tipped the scales at around 8kg.
He wasn't too far offshore, only a couple of hundred metres and in about 10 metres of water. Caught just off Napier in Hawkes bay.
I agree what was mentioned in a previous post a large portion of the snapper I catch when I go back to NZ are a lot darker(red) than the ones I have caught here. My mates in NZ call them 'kelpies' and yes the area we were fishing at the time was full of kelp beds. Maybe its the snappers way of changing to suit the environment or maybe the water temp and clarity has something to do with it . The lighter coloured snapper we catch in NZ seem to be schoolies that are caught over sand/worm beds.
As for the humps, my mates in NZ laugh when they see pictures of the snapper in OZ. My grandfather and I have caught snapper up to 30lb in NZ and they dont have anything resembling a hump. I have heard rumour that the snapper get this bump from banging its head against the rocks. If that is the case the Kiwi snapper must be a lot smarter or the rocks a lot softer
