Nerang River Tailor??

Hey guys,

In my last few outings in the Nerang River (around Sorrento) using lures i have caught small tailor, about 20cm MAX and also got one that size in my canal today on a small live mullet and i was wondering will they grow any bigger up in the river or is this about the size they get. If they do get above the legal limit (30cm i think ) up in the river , what is the best way to target them.

Hey Dylan,

I've got Tailor 60cm+ on the Nerang....."around" Benowa - Early morning(Just before sunrise) best time to target em, or on/after sunset, My preferred method is slugs as I can cover a lot more ground than with using a pillie on a gang.

Got a few questions now:

• When you say slugs, do you mean like Lazer Metal slugs??? i have lures like this if this is what you mean. (any colours more preferred?)

• And how do you retrieve them?? Close to the surface, or down deep??? Fast or Slow??

• When you say around benowa do you mean in the River or in the canals? (PM me exact spot if you want )

I use Raiders, Psyko's, Sliders , lasers etc - When est. I downsize to 10-20gm....colour doesn't seem to make much difference.

Retrieve - Mix it up...Flat out/lift the rod so it skips on the surface/slow/ irregular/twitch your rod tip....you're trying to mimic a fleeing bait fish...your slug needs to look attractive to the predator.

Both river and canals will produce....middle of the day is pretty much a time waster....far to much boat traffic.....hit it REAL early!

iv hooked a 45 cm tailor on sp's. i was fishen for them on the weekend an got no tailor.

yeah mate there is deff tailor up in the nerang,,, agree with you grimezy the best time is early morn or just on night ive caught em on hard bodies trolling for jacks up there. biggest only 50cm.

Dylan, all tailor spend the first year of their lives in an estuary before joining the migration that all tailor 1yr and older must do. Mature tailor definitely get up the streams but won't be in the same numbers as immature fish.

If bait fishing is more your thing, this is my advise:

-20lb main mono / Braid
-20Lb leader in fluro / mono ( i use fluro)
-WA pillchards on ganghooks
-Sunrise / Sunset (dont bother any other time)
-find deep gutters if your fishing beaches
-25cm leader (any longer, the line gets tanled around the sinker or pilli)
-use back swivels as tailor will attack gold swivels when they are on the chew thinking its bait fish

Cut the tail off the pillchard for two reasons. Firstly you will get a better cast and the pillchard wont spin mid air and get tangled.

Secondly, tailor usually attach their prey fr the back. Usually they will bite the tail off and come back to take the entire bait. By cutting the tail off, the hooks will be closer to the end and you will have a good chance for a hook up.

Try this mate, n you will catch for sure.

Even though im not targeting tailor from the beach, im looking to target them in the Nerang River, as mentioned, dusk and dawn seem the way to go using either pillys or lazers/raiders etc. I am wondering what kind of areas do tailor live? and what do i look out for (eg. surface action?? fishfinder??)
