Offshore Townsville

Went offshore last Friday arvo for a trout fish during the day and reddies overnight. Whilst we did get a few red emperor at night with the bycatch of lippers and spangled emperor it was the daytime trout fishing that was the standout.

In about 2.5hr we had our bag limit of trout. We both agreed we should have had a floater out whilst bottom bashing but were too busy to bother. Early Tuesday my mate pictured in the photo went out again with another mate and bagged out on trout again in less than 2.5hrs. Red emperor and the usual bycatch as well ment they were home the same day.

This time my mate had a floater out whilst bottom bashing and hooked the spaniards. This was the biggest one.

Do you understand the concept of an 'in possession limit' as opposed to a 'bag limit'? Thats a lot of Trout to eat in just a few days!! Good fishing though!

Mate instead of trying to be a good citizen read the story.......The first trip was with his mate and the 2nd was his mate and another guy......So therefore the fish would have been broken up....So mate just becaus ur jelous....Dont put other peoples fishing trips down..IMO....

Not trying to put anyone down. It was good fishing. And if he has has the use for the fish....great, I AM jealous! It was a genuine question regarding the law. Many people do not know that a possession limit is different from a bag limit, and the DPI&F will not care.

Mate thats a pisser of a spanyid. Any idea what weight it went. Well done on the trout, would have been good fun.

Not too sure about the weight but he is a experienced fisho and he thinks 40 - 50lb.

Regarding the possession limit, well first time to the reef in nearly 3 months due to weather and work. Yes perhaps we did, if you count the ones in the freezer, exceed by 7 trout, but have some very appreciative friends and relations.

Thanks for the honesty there Robbo. My original question was intended to inform, not criticize. I know exactly what its like to not be able to fish due to weather. And with the cost of fuel to run those distances its good to bring the goods home.

I feel for all the townsville blokes Robbo, it is always a long time between trips offshore up there because of the no stop south easters. Got to make the most of the good weather. Well done on the massive spanyid mate.

I will answer your genuine question about possession versus bag limits.
Everyone uses the term "Bag Limit" because that was the old term prior to the DPI changing it to a posession limit. That means if you have more than your "Possesion Limit" on you at any one time, whether it be on a boat, on land , in your car, in your house, the DPI will fine you etc.

However the DPI will only enter your house with a search warrant which they do very seldomly when someone is grossly flouting the rules.

If anyone needs to know what the rules are im sure they will look them up on the website, the DPI guys I have dealt with show common sense in dealing with these issues and would not begrudge someone a feed of fish or a little more in their home freezer (Above the possesion limit) when they know about weather restrictions.

There is a genuine answer for your genuine question.

Im genuinly sick of people questioning other peoples posts on this forum (bag limits etc).
This is a place people come to to inform others of there success/unsuccesses when fishing (Offshore/reports) leave law inforcement up to people who are qualified to do so.
Im sure if people want to be educated they will ask.

Well done on a top day, and an even better catch. Jeez all you guys who venture wide make me so jealous, I can make the trip on a very calm day, but we all know how scarce those days are!
