Changing a broken winch strap.

G'day all,

Got a feeling this will finish along the lines of "you dumb bastard", but here goes.

Have to change a broken strap on my trailer winch.
Bought a new one......but how the hell do you get the old one off ???????

The old strap seems to feed out of the centre of the spool, but I can't for the life of me even work out how to get the spool off.
I know that the entire winch assembly can be removed by just unbolting it, but even so, ......still can't work out how to get the old strap off, unless i just cut it off, but then, how do I fit the new one ????
Do i take off the winch ??? ........and, if so, how do you get the spool off ??

Just in case the answer is " Ring the Trailer Manufacturer...." no bloody idea who that is,............. plate says "Special Trailer".

I'm thinking just take it to a boat yard, or find a trailer mob......

I hope somebody with real knowledge notices your post, but in the meantime I'll try to remember what I did.
Mine had wire on before i put the strap on, it was bolted to the centre of the winch reel. I vaguely recall that to get the reel off I had to drift out a 'roll pin', like a bolt but really a bit of metal rolled into a pipe.
In my case i had to drill a couple of holes and pop rivet (monel) through a couple of ss washers and the strap, to attach it on to the reel.
If you can get the roll pin out you might be able to see how they locked the strap on to your winch reel.

are you talking strap or cable
if its strap for strap you should be able to cut of at spool poke the old one in and force the new one in they are a pain
when the old one is out you should be left with slot about 5x50mm

punch out the centre pin ( held in by circlip?) that goes through the strap end inside the winch. Then push the centre pin back in while trying to get the strap in through the slot. you end up having the pin go through the winch and loop thats at the end of the strap. There you go easy peasy....hope i sort of explained it right.

Getting that centre pin out might be the problem.
Doesn't appear to be a circlip on the outer side of the winch casing.
What the hell, i'll try to find a way to punch it out anyway

News update.

When looking to find the best way to punch out the centre pin, discovered there was a roll pin holding the bloody thing together. (thought it was a grub screw)
So, got that out of the way, and then proceeded to belt the living suitcase out of the centre pin, with punches, hammers, 5 & 10 pound hammers.

Do you think it would move....?????

Even went to Bias, and looked at an exploded illustration of the winch, just to make sure of how it went together.
Armed with the info, proceeded to belt the f%*&$&g thing until finally, success !
Good as new now.....and why ??


Because I went and bought a new one......%*#k the old winch.

By the way...........got a winch for sale...........slightly used......
