Last night a non fishing mate and I went down to Main Beach for a fish. It was his first go at beach fishing.
We were trying for Tailor, his rig consisted of a wire trace that you could land a elephant on, he baited a pilly head down on a set of gangs. I tried to explain that tailor bite the tail off fish and then maul them. He said he couldn't be bothered changing it and cast in, not longer after he landed a cracker tailor. That got me thinking maybe we put to much thought into catching fish.

funny things ahppen like that all the time, he proably almost hit it on the Head, BUT when the going is tough and they are a tad "picky" then his tow rope trace will not land him much, head or tail first I reckon makes no difference to the bites.

mate when Tailor are on the chew they will bite at any thing.
some of the old timers when I was growing up did not use bait at all
two hooks back to back an there special knots and a Milk bottle top whether it be Red, Green or Silver (they use to be Aluminium) they would take them down to the surf and always came home with a feed of good size Tailor so as for theory mate.
then the old timers are the ones you need to speak to and they will tell
when it comes to tailor blow your theory out your AS##hole?

P.S I,m not being nasty mate but some times we need to throw are theory's out the door as My Grand fathers and Uncle's would be saying if they where still here

Agree in most what you are saying. My old man would go fishing say for bream back in the days, and come home with bags of fish and all good sizes every time.

Now, we are talking 20yrs ago. Same for tailor. Now days, it is slower. Is it because fish stocks have depleted? Or is it because fish are somewhat smarter and have adapted/changed?? Who knows..

When fish are on the chew, its easy. And like tailor, you can thow a piece of metal with hooks at the back and come home with a good feed.

However, when the going gets tuff, i think you need to think more carefully about what you are doing. its not an exact science, although there are certain things we can do to help improve our chances.

mate i could not agree more, we do need to think about the change in tactic's from time to time.
however my point was to some times listen to the old timers ways, they have the knowledge and the know how of where and how to find fish and some times even the right advice on burly to bring them on the chew.
many a time i have ventured out an only come home with a couple or no fish not from the lack of trying, weeks later an same conditions gone back out no chew an tried Grand-dads recipe and the chew is on some things just do not change.
it is knowledge an tactic's combined, but for me it is just about being on the water no fish tough biscuits, catching them is a bonus, it is just a matter of the peace and quiet and relaxation that suite me

I think that with surf gutters it is all a bit in the air really .......the conditions can and do change fairly quickly. Tailor in particular are opportunist feeders. I've seen them chase food in very shallow gutters and lots of suds and sand and then not find them in the more traditional "good looking' gutters 100m down the beach.
I am fairly certain that tailor are aggressive in the feeding and will attack their prey by biting off the tail and then returning to eat its injured defenseless prey. Hence the name.
I knew an old timer that would fish the inside of the bar between straddie and moreton many years ago and he used to use cheddar cheese on a double hook to chase tailor and mackeral. Funny thing was though that he very rarely came home without a feed. It was also surprising the by-catch he would get.
In the end if a fish is hungry enough it will eat anything thrown its way.

When tailor are in a feeding frenzy they slam anything. i remember the second tailor i ever caught was a 3 pounder on a bream rod and a beach worm, it hit like a freight train. but when they are a bit patchy, an i miss one, i always find that they have snipped the fish off from the back end.
