READY, STEADY, THREADY
Hit the Brisbane river today to try my luck at the local threadfin population.
I started fishing just after 6am and there was still a fair amount of fog on the water. Thirds cast and I ended up with a big hub cap sized flounder.
Then I had a nice little touch up from I believe was a missed hooked up on a thready. At least I knew they were around.
Well after 3 hours of casting and moving and turning the same patch of water over and over again 2 fellow fisho’s in kayaks turned up under stealth mode.
A quick hello and we all started fishing the same area. I though I would give the Kyak guys a bit of room so I let the current pull me down about 20m below where they were fishing and that was it. WACK.
Drag started peeling of the 3500hd Certate. The run left no doubt in my mind that I was onto my first threadfin salmon. I made sure I did not have a heap of drag as I did not want to loose a thready by pulling hooks with a strong drag. The thready gave a great account for itself with plenty of hard runs but the combination of the Daiwa 3500hd Certate and the Daiwa Coastal Tournament rod plus the 60lb leader made short work of the fish, well 6 mins of fighting and he was stuffed.
The I had a problem. Hmmmmmmmm how do I get him on board????
Well it just so happens that one of the kayak guys has a set of lip grippers. He graciously lipped the thready from his kayak and then passed me the grips for me to boat the thready. What a champion guy.
Next thing he offer to take photos for me. What a great guy. After a few happy snaps to remember to occasion I swum the thready for about 5 mins behind the boat. He swum down but later re-surfaced and was not happy.
After several coaxing attempt with the paddle, the kayak guy managed to touch the thready with his paddle and off he swum to the bottom.
I hang around the area moving up and down with the leccy to make sure he did not re-surface again.
A quick thank you to the kayakers, a rest for 10 mins, then I was off to chase some snapper around the terminal.
5 casts later I was onto a legal squire so in the livewell he went. Then everything went quite for 15 mins. There was a heap of bait around and then BANG. A big pod of mack tuna burst into life smashing bait left right and center. They were that close I could see the individual tuna’s and they ranged from 2-3kg models up to some chunky 6kg specimens.
Between 3 boats throwing everything at the school and none of us managed to pull a fish. It was amazing that I matched the hatch but they were still uninterested in what I had to offer.
So I moved onto another spot and with 3 casts I managed to land a small jewy of around 30cm. Then next cast another jew, then next another and so on and so on and after 18 casts I managed 18 small jews ranging from 30cm to mid 45cm fish all on 3 inch plastics. Good fun on the light tackle and I was stoked with the numbers and the shear aggression these little buggers had.
Then as midday loomed I headed back to the ramp to beat the traffic and I was feeling pretty good about my eventful day.
Cheers
Lee
A big thank you to the guys in the Kayaks, I did not get your name but your help with taking pics of the thready and lipping the fish was very appreciated. As a token I would like repay the favour with a trip out in the boat if you would like. Just pm me and we can sort it out. Thanks again.
