I used to be a daiwa fan many years ago, and I used to be a shimano fan until about 4 years ago. I am getting a very good run out of the Okumas lately and Iam surprised how much hard work they can handle.

Seems to me both Daiwa and Shimano have been marketing for max profit and this is even more clear in thier top range gear. Seriously, for the prices that are being paid for their top line gear you could buy something of a higher quality that is built in lots lower numbers and 100% real metal. With the Asian technology and experience in creating anything mechanical these reels they make in the quantities they do should be cheaper by hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

$1000 for a spinning reel can buy you an awful lot of high quality gear, but frankly I do not see that amount of value in the top line Daiwas and Shimanos.

Recently I have been having a lot of fun with some old technology.
I have a Penn 309m which has a gear ratio of 2.8:1, but because it has a relatively large diameter spool, it`s not as slow as it sounds and has heaps of torque.
I have been using it for reef fishing with 50lb braid. I took the levelwind off and it has been a lot of fun. This reel was first made in 1966 and you can buy one now for $75.00 new.
I have Avets and Toriums and later model Penns which will do the same job, but sometimes a change is good.

In this life time ive learnt that you dont need a $700 eggy to catch trout and bream down this way.MAYBE there is that much pressure on mainland fishieies that finesse high end gear is nessary to catch fish but this is something ive thankfully never had to deal with, so the thought has never crossed my mind(not for long anyway.)
MAYBE next lifetime if i win the lottery.

for me i go by daiwa spin reels and shimano overheads.
i dont by the best gear out there but for most of my fishin (breamin with sp's) i use daiwa sols very good reel for there price and they have never let me down.
sooooo many people dont relise how constintly casting and retreving lures puts so much stress on your gear.
how many times do u think you would cast a soft plastic or crankbait in a 5 hour session of luring compaired to soaking a bait???

Yer you buy what you want or can afford to buy....

At the end of ther day who really cares, expensive or cheap its a bloody fishing reel... it either you can justify the cost or not...

Me personally im a bling bling fisherman...designer label all the way... and yes im a victim of advertising and well thought out marketing strategies but i like it. It makes me feel good to know i have the best gear money can buy. It a mental thing as much as anything..but at least i cant blame my gear if i have a bad session fishing!!!!

Most people out there that fish in australia which is the general public 5 million was the latest figure,wouldn’t even know that $700 or $1000 egg beaters even exist.
Its only in these forums that these sort of reels get mentioned.Or magazines.

Go to a jetty or a boat ramp on a busy day and have a look at what they use and you won’t see expensive reels.Unless your chasing GTs,tuna sailfish.
A lot comes down to what type of fish you have in the area,also are you spinning or just dropping a bait over the side.
Which will determine what dollars are going to be spent.

You have some that have spent a lot of money on tackle,thousands of dollars.
And these people may have the money to do it cause they run a successful business,live at home with their parents virtually rent free or had a big pay out from an employer.
But the average worker with morguage,kids and an over due credit card has to pick their gear wisely.

For me i'm lucky I can buy what ever I want but I will not over pay just for a brand name.Not when another brand will do the same job and have the same quality and reliability

I am about to spool up some Sunline Rockfish PE .4 on to my new exist so I'll let you know soon if it's worth the money!

I work a lot and don't get to fish as often as I'd like, so If I catch a couple of nice bream on my new outfit it will have paid for itself as far as I am concerned.

I think if I was honest with myself though I would trade my top end gear for more free time on the water.

I guess we can't have it both ways unless very lucky.

I like Daiwa so I am reccomending their models.

These prices are rough recommended so you may find them cheaper.

Sol - good starting point @ around $300 I think.

Luvias - new tech, very light and decent quality $420ish

Certate 2004 finesse custom - Shallow spool, great reel, my recommendation $629

Exist 2004- top of the line, best of everything,( I just got one) $929

If you want something cheaper I'm not sure of the models sorry. I have never used a Sol but there are a lot of people on here that rate them above similarly priced shimano's I think.

Check out Fish Head at Victoria point, bring your rod and they will have somethig to suit.

pinhead- as i said i use daiwa sols and i think they will handle almost anything what comes along ive caught bream jack to trevally up to 4kg on my 2000 modle exellent reel.
bcf has em for $240 atm is ur looking cheaper then that a daiwa infeet or tierra for around $180 then daiwa exeller 2000 for $140
